Position Description

Primary Function:

This position’s primary responsibilities are to maintain and be the subject matter expert on all automated material handling and building systems to support the goals of the Distribution Center. Provide technical expertise for day to day issues and provide solutions for recurring problems for all mechanical, electrical and operational controls associated with the automated material handling system, as well as building equipment and components as required in order to provide maximum system uptime.  The job scope includes recommending changes to and executing preventative maintenance programs and repairs to automated material handling equipment, building envelope and building MEP (mechanical/electrical/plumbing) systems. 

Principal Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Be the primary responder (24x7) for all complex system issues involving automated material handling sortation and controls (EMS, WCS, Sort Director, EWM, Hardware, Software, etc.) Material handling equipment to include: AS/RS, cross belt sorters, conveyors, auto document insertion equipment, automated packing and lidding machines, carton erectors, print and apply.
  • Assists with any infrastructure upgrades along with modifications/repairs to DC assets.
  • Troubleshoot/diagnose and repair the mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, hydraulic and control system components of the automated material handling system and building components, including but not limited to:
  • PLCs
  • DC drives
  • AC invertors
  • Linear motors
  • Print and apply
  • VFDs
  • Encoders
  • Scanners
  • Power distribution
  • Communication systems (CAN, ASi, Profi, ethernet, etc.)
  • Ability to work independently on projects and work assignments.
  • Work directly with contractors, service providers and other maintenance personnel.
  • Ability to operate all material handling and mobile equipment within the Distribution Center.
  • Easily adjusts to changes in priorities, and flexible to respond to on-call emergencies.
  • Works in cross-functional teams, both internal and external, to the DC operations to identify and resolve problems by proposing unique and innovative solutions.
  • Must be available for 24-hour on-call rotation.
  • Performs audits and quality checks on Powered Industrial Equipment, automated material handling systems and building assets.
  • Ability to provide root cause anaylise on various building equipment, MHE and PIE.
  • Proactive troubleshooting and information reporting on material handling system performance (i.e. charts, graphs, data, etc.).
  • Other duties, as assigned.

Position Requirements:

Preferred Education & Experience:

  • Technical degree required, Bachelor’s degree in Engineering preferred.
  • Minimum of 5 years of building and equipment maintenance experience with two years maintaining automated material handling systems.
  • Completion of technical training in electronic controls, power distribution and PLC troubleshooting.
  • Computer literate – specifically using the MS Outlook and other Microsoft products.
  • Knowledge and application of safe work practices, LOTO standards and Arc Flash.
  • Demonstrated ability to follow directions with acute attention to detail and high level of record keeping accuracy.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate, troubleshoot and resolve problems associated with computer controlled building management systems, automated material handling systems, and maintenance management systems (CMMS) in a time sensitive environment.
  • Skilled at using electrical test equipment, hand tools, power tools, calipers, gauges, etc.
  • Experienced with reading and interpreting MEP (Mechanical/Electrical/Plumbing) drawings and schematics.
  • High level of knowledge and understanding of codes such as the NEC, BOCA and/or UBC, MSDS, and OSHA.
  • Demonstrated reliability/flexibility in regard to attendance.
  • Possess strong technical skills to become subject matter expert for automated material handling systems.
  • Design, implement, and document PLC (Siemens, Allen Bradley, etc.) programming changes to automated equipment when authorized.
  • Strong understanding of power distribution, power generation, and control circuits.
  • Troubleshoot and implement changes to I/O device networks such as ProfiBus, ASiBus, Data Highway and CanBus.
  • Experience with thermal imaging equipment to detect early failure(s) of both mechanical and electrical equipment.
  • Experienced with AC drives (set-up, programming, faults).
  • Ability to develop skill sets through ongoing training in both formal and informal settings.
  • Ability to thrive in a continuous learning environment and possess the initiative to learn and understand all facets of system operation and use.
  • Assist in coordination and project management for equipment installation and/or modifications.
  • Interact with manufacturers, vendors, and operations department to remedy concerns, offer solutions or implement modifications.
  • Highly detail oriented.
  • Capable of navigating conveyor interfacing systems for the purpose of extracting data for metric reporting.
  • Ability to provide answers to all Technicians and set up training modules to build skillsets for the team.
  • Provide solutions to benefit the entire network and work with Continuous Improvement teams to gain effectiveness.

Work Environment:

  • Ability to grasp, bend and lift.

  • Able to safely operate all hand tools.
  • Able to lift up to 75 pounds on a regular basis.
  • Able to operate powered industrial equipment including forklifts, pallet-jacks, and handcarts.
  • Must be able to tolerate an environment with exposure to heat, cold, noise, dust and work around moving equipment – often times while working in uncomfortable positions.
