Sr Director, Technical Architecture Leader

*This role is typically located in our downtown Chicago office, but due to COVID-19 will be fully virtual until further notice.  Once this office location has a return to work plan, the team member will be required to be on-site.



The Senior Director, Architecture is the leader of IT architecture, governance, and its alignment with Product/Business. They co-create a holistic (process, information, application) vision with Product and Engineering leaders, and derive a technical map from Product’s business roadmap to drive a healthy and effective capability enabling the needs of the business. They lead a team of Group and Senior Architects who specialize in component capabilities within their product domain with the responsibility of choreographing how those G/S Architects interact across their domain and within their domain. They are active members/orchestrators of the governance board, peer-reviewing designs from other Engineering organizations as well as their respective product domains, proposing/ratifying standards and practices within an organization, and supporting and enabling their Architecture team to follow approved standards and practices.  They also coordinate the Technical Subject Matter Experts (TSMEs) in guiding and training the organization towards key Architectural principles such as APIs, Event-Driven Architectures, or Cloud-Native architectures ensuring that there is a program for the alignment work across the entire Enterprise.



Principle Duties / Responsibilities


  • Manage a team of technology experts and architects to ensure high quality and scalable code.
  • Lead the Architecture practice at a high-level within Engineering and the enterprise along with Engineering leadership, Product, and Architecture Groups 
  • Evaluating internal Domain Architecture strategies, and IT processes and suggesting improvements
  • Evaluating solution engineering, solutions architecture, talent recruiting, and enablement across the Engineering Organization 
  • Suggest areas of technology optimization based on business need and inefficiencies 
  • Ensuring the efficiency, security, and support of Grainger’s organizational goals for Engineering. 
  • Lead the creation of architectural standards, capabilities, and governance at Grainger within the Engineering organization
  • Provide metrics to business on the overall health of business to IT strategy alignment 
  • Provide metrics to the overall business on design execution and enablement across capability teams and domains 
  • Solution Options: Evaluates and advises on options, risks, costs versus benefits, system impacts, and technology priorities in highly complex situations
  • Solution Standards: Defines, reviews and leads solution standards
  • Architecture: Integrates the Capability Domain level logical and transition architectures
  • Leadership: Develops and guides the performance of a team of Group/Senior Tech Leads, Enterprise Architects, and Technical SMEs. Ensures engineering staff are following architecture best practices and standards
  • Training: Leads the training and development of a team of Technical SMEs and Group/Senior Architects in enabling architecture principles and patterns across the enterprise
  • Communication: Communicates, champions and improves the architecture process, its outcome and ongoing results
  • Domain Modelling: Consult with Architects and others during Domain Modelling exercises to ensure wider alignment between domains
  • Research: Conducts technology research and evaluates if there are opportunities to mature both the capability & architecture process
  • Governance Board: Participates in Governance processes. Assists senior architects and TSMEs in preparing for Governance processes when needed
  • Supports EAs in Vendor Managements, Risk Analysis, and general compliance
  • Responsible for all tools required for above functions


Preferred Education & Experience


  • 7-10 years architecture experience
  • 15+ years of technology / business experience
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science (related) or equivalent experience in hands-on software design, distributed systems architectures, services-oriented styles, or cloud native
  • Experience with multiple IT disciplines 
  • Demonstrates an understanding of the business 
  • Strong modeling, analytical and communication capabilities 
  • Demonstrates an understanding of the business
  • Collaboration and consultation skills
  • Can articulate & evaluate applicability of various architecture styles along with their tradeoffs 
  • Deep understanding of one or more business domains 
  • Ability to communicate across both technical and non-technical roles 
  • Depth of experience with cloud native development and cloud providers
  • Experience in modernizing IT footprint and demonstrated ability to maintain an agile approach to IT
  • Strong understanding of modern architectural and engineering approaches in infrastructure, software, and security
  • Ability to traverse into the details while being able to take a step back to assess patterns
