Position Details

Grainger is looking for an experienced Senior Software Engineer to help scale our Product Security team. You will solve real business problems with automation, self-service, and opinionated defaults that reduce risk without slowing delivery. Your work will focus on building guardrails, not gates, so developers ship more secure code. You will also identify and drive opportunities that help teams adopt good security practices. You’ll be responsible for everything you build, from design and delivery through production support.

You will work in a hybrid mode from our Lake Forest, IL or Chicago, IL offices. You will report to Manager of Security Automation.

You Will

  • Build applications and develop product design solutions in partnership with engineers, architects, and analysts leading to scalable and maintainable software solutions
  • Utilize full stack specialized skills based on specific platform or domain as required
  • Implement continuous delivery activities (CI/CD) and drive engineering best practices
  • Support team activities and pair with peers to work on stories
  • Coach and mentor junior engineers
  • Consistently practice sensible defaults
  • Design, build, and operate self-service, automated security capabilities leveraged company-wide across engineering teams
  • Contribute across Product Security capabilities including secrets management, vulnerability management, policy as code (OPA), and application security risk platforms
  • Work independently on ambiguous problems, drive designs to decisions, and document outcomes through Architecture Decision Records (ADRs)
  • Influence technical implementation decisions by connecting business requirements to technology choices and outcomes
  • Identify and proactively manage risk while modernizing legacy services and reducing technical debt
  • Collaborate with Engineering Managers, technical leads, and Product Engineering teams to shape roadmaps, priorities, and security automation solutions throughout the SDLC
  • Suggest secure defaults and advise on clean coding practices, pipeline test coverage, and observability strategies

You Have

  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent experience required
  • 3+ years experience with modern software engineering; designing, building, and deploying scalable software applications required
  • Understanding of distributed system design
  • Experience analyzing and interpreting complex problems and processes
  • Familiarity with Agile/Scrum methodologies and DevOps practices
  • Experience building and operating services in production within large, distributed environments across multiple teams
  • Experience coding in Python, Go, Java, or similar modern programming languages, including API and service development
  • Full stack development experience, including React or comparable frontend frameworks
  • Knowledge of cloud-native, event-driven, microservices-based architectures and associated operational concerns including resiliency, observability, and monitoring
  • Experience implementing DevSecOps solutions such as vulnerability scanning, secrets management, or policy-as-code capabilities
  • Working knowledge of containers and Kubernetes
  • Cloud experience with AWS or similar providers, including Infrastructure as Code using Terraform and automation through APIs or CLI tooling
  • Experience with CI/CD principles and tools such as GitHub Actions
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to mentor, influence, and collaborate across teams
  • Experience or working knowledge of applying AI within the software development lifecycle
