Compensation

The anticipated base pay compensation range for this position is $112,900.00$188,100.00. This role is eligible for an incentive target of up to 5 %, based on the achievement of individual and company performance objectives in accordance with the current terms of the incentive program which are subject to change.

Position Details

The Machine Learning Team in the Grainger Technology Group is hiring an Applied ML Scientist to help design, develop, and deploy advanced machine learning solutions for Grainger’s e-procurement (ePro) system. You will contribute to ML solutions, with techniques ranging from classical statistical modeling to modern AI and foundation models, designed to help modernize and streamline Grainger’s e-procurement operations.  

 

You Will

  • Conduct exploratory data analysis to frame business problems, identify patterns, and define data and modeling requirements.
  • Design, train, validate, and improve machine learning, deep learning, and related models for prediction, classification, ranking, retrieval, recommendation, matching/ entity resolution, product data enrichment, and related applications.
  • Build maintainable, reusable code and data workflows using Python, SQL, and related tools to support experimentation, model development, and deployment.
  • Evaluate model performance using appropriate metrics, experiments, and error analysis, and recommend improvements based on results.
  • Partner with engineers, product managers, analysts, and other stakeholders to translate requirements into scalable, production-ready machine learning solutions.
  • Support use cases including agentic automation, digital assistants, document intelligence and entity resolution. 
  • Document methods, assumptions, results, and tradeoffs, and communicate technical findings and recommendations clearly to technical and nontechnical audiences.

 

You Have

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science, Statistics, Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, Engineering, Data Science, or a related field required required
  • Master's Degree in a related field preferred
  • 2+ years of experience in machine learning, data science, applied statistics, or a related analytical field required.  
  • Strong Python and SQL programming skills, including data manipulation, analysis, and model development. 
  • Knowledge of machine learning, statistical modeling, and model evaluation techniques. 
  • Experience with feature engineering, experimentation, and interpreting model performance. 
  • Ability to write maintainable code and work within software development practices such as version control and code review. 
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills with the ability to explain technical concepts and tradeoffs to varied audiences. 
  • Demonstrated experience with the scientific python stack including numpy, scipy, scikit-learn, statsmodels, pandas and torch. 
  • Experience with Python API frameworks like Django, FastAPI or Flask, and with workflow orchestration tools like Airflow or Prefect preferred.
  • Experience working with Snowflake or Databricks, MLFlow, Docker and Kubernetes preferred.
