Position Details:

You will support engineering teams across the Grainger Technology Group (GTG) to responsibly use open source software in the products we build and the technology we support. Additionally, this role may look for open source projects that Grainger can contribute to as part of our engagement in the broader community as we evolve in our digital journey.

You will work with Product team members, engineers at different level, architects, shared services, security, vendor management, intellectual property and legal teams to build a reliable system of managing what components are being directly or indirectly consumed and the scope of such use. You will build a set of selection criteria and process for selecting open source projects for greater engagement and socialize that with leadership across Grainger.

You will report to the Director of Engineering Effectiveness and can be based remotely or in Chicago, IL.


You Will:

  • Work across several disciplines to understand how engineering teams select and consume open source libraries.
  • Drive a culture of inner source solutions across all areas of engineering in partnership with engineering managers and practice leads.
  • Create or use existing systems to produce Software Bill of Materials for all applications that are deployed with a primary focus on applications using open source libraries. Information needs to be published to others easily, including vendor management.
  • Create and maintain a system and related processes that ensure license compliance through automation and fast feedback with key stakeholder engagement to the engineers selecting open source components.
  • Collaborate with legal to refine and implement standards for open source component grading and usage, and management.
  • Coordinate and provide content and conduct training for open source training materials for engineers across the business. This will include licenses, attribution and security awareness.
  • Create and work across team member groups to understand the health of open source projects that we have in use, identifying risk and mitigation strategies.
  • Explain the value of open source and the possible financial impact of not licensing from commercial vendors to all levels of the organization across technology, legal and finance
  • Advocate for engineers to participate in open source projects that are relevant to the work Grainger is doing observing defined criteria and processes.
  • Identify and represent Grainger in open source projects and foundations that are related to important engineering work with the goal of increasing Grainger's technical brand.


You Have:

  • Minimum 5 years experience working in and leading one or more open source communities, or managing open source in a technology team.
  • Experience building open source software delivery systems that accommodate asynchronous contribution from a diverse skill set.
  • A deep desire to improve the engineering experience by empowering engineers to take advantage of open source software.
  • An understanding of various software licenses and how they impact the usability of a software package in different use cases
  • A mindset for compliance and innovation
  • Minimum 5 years of experience developing software using open source libraries across two or more communities (i.e. Java/Kotlin, Node.js, Python, Golang)
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related study or equivalent project-related experience.
