Position Details:

Core Experience’s mission is to provide products that give Grainger a competitive advantage in user interface development.

We own the entire toolset for Grainger’s micro frontend ecosystem: design systems, project templates, reusable deployment pipelines, tooling for analytics, tooling for observability, and more! Because our team makes decisions that impact every digital product at Grainger, Core Experience engineers are important and highly visible members of the frontend development community at Grainger.

The Role:

Staff Engineer (SE4) is a dynamic and impactful role where you will influence decisions, lead projects, and be responsible for important business outcomes. You will have substantial autonomy to solve complicated problems, so sound judgement is important.

A key challenge you will face in this role is navigating ambiguity to solve open-ended problems. As a Staff Engineer, you are expected to solve problems that are affecting multiple teams. You will also be responsible for setting project-level goals, rather than simply hitting them.

You will report to Senior Manager, Product Engineering and the primary location will be Chicago with the ability to work from home 3 days per week or work remotely if you live outside of the Chicago area.

You Will:

  • Develop an internal network so that you can stay up to date on problems being faced by frontend engineers within our org and build buy-in for your proposals
  • Lead team-level projects, taking sometimes ambiguous guidance, communicating with stakeholders, setting goals, and completing tasks both technical and non-technical to achieve intended outcomes
  • Actively engage in product strategy and prioritization discussions at the team level
  • Deliver well-defined features, fixes, and technical upgrades at an efficient pace and with a high level of quality
  • Actively engage in the code review process, both giving and receiving feedback from your teammates

You Have

  • 6+ years of experience building software as part of a team in a professional setting.
  • Experience driving technical migrations that affect multiple teams.
  • Experience leading projects at the team level.
  • Understanding of micro frontend architecture principles.
  • Experience with React.
  • Experience with GitHub Actions workflows.
  • Ability and experience with onboarding quickly to new technologies.
