Sr Mgr, Portfolio Management

Purpose 

 

This role typically is located in either our Lake Forest headquarters or our downtown Chicago office, but due to COVID-19 will be fully virtual until further notice.  Once these office locations have a return to work plan, the team member will be required to be on-site.

We are looking for exceptional Sr. Portfolio Managers to help guide and chart a course for Grainger’s enterprise systems and application development so that Grainger continues to be the destination for “the ones that get it done”. 

 

The Sr. Portfolio Manager assumes the overarching responsibility for supporting organizational and IT leadership in their efforts at overseeing, managing and leveraging the entire life cycle of IT investments and initiatives to optimally achieve the enterprise goals and objectives. The Sr. Portfolio Manager is responsible for managing complex and cross-functional projects that will enable Grainger to deliver tools and technology to improve the customer experience through-out the customer’s journey through various digital channels. This work tends to cross into many IT and business lines, so it requires coordination and influence. The Sr. Portfolio Manager will be a main point of contact for all stakeholder questions, concerns, and issues around IT projects. 


The Sr. Portfolio Manager will have strong technical and analytical skills as well as strong interpersonal and effective communication skills. You must be a team player with the ability to manage work and guide team members. The Sr. Portfolio Manager will have a strong understanding of the business function including business drivers and strategies, industry trends, strategic partner relationships, key executives and decision makers, and competitive position in the marketplace.  

 

Responsibilities: 

 

Portfolio Leadership 

  • Facilitate portfolio management processes throughout lifecycle, including but not limited to demand management, resource management, execution and financial management. Heavy emphasis on identifying and quantifying the impact of decisions required to accommodate new demand.
  • Demand management: Understand the project ask, requirements gathering and definitions, dive into root cause including processes and potential business improvements and ensure all initial stages of project are met (requirements, design, funding, etc.).
  • Execution:  Accountable for successful delivery of project, including coordination of ceremonies and issue resolution.  
  • Manage communication to all groups including working team, stakeholders, peripheral teams and executive sponsors.
  • Create updates and deliver updates when appropriate
  •  Financials: Accomplishes financial objectives by getting approvals from business and IT stakeholders, build business case, submit accurate monthly forecasts, manage the budget through forecasting requirements, analyzing variances, and initiating corrective action. 

 

Business Partnership & Collaboration 

 

 

  • Collaborate with global, senior level leaders to assist with translating business strategies into technical project execution - operating at both the strategic and tactical level to manage stakeholder expectations and perceptions
  • Interpret internal/external business challenges and recommends best practices to improve products, processes or services. 

 

Problem Solving 

  • Lead others to solve complex problems; uses sophisticated analytical thought to exercise judgment and identify innovative solutions
  • Capture and articulate the IT Portfolio Roadmap.  Identifies dependencies and conflicts and actively resolves them
  • Review, resolve and approve priorities within a portfolio.  Provides consolidated list of needs to engineering teams. 

 
Impact 

  • Responsible for describing value of the project including creating financial business cases or other mediums for business value creation (should highlight tracking to ensure that value was captured)
  • Impacts the achievement of customer, operational, project or service objectives; work is guided by functional policies. 


Qualifications: 


The ideal candidate will possess a business, finance and IT background that enables them to drive an engagement and interact at the highest levels of the enterprise. The candidate will have the technical depth, business experience and financial understanding to easily communicate the benefits of their work. The candidate will have familiarity with the development process, and how injecting business value and economic discussions can help drive/accelerate initiatives. 


We are looking for: 


• BA/BS in Computer Science or similar subject or equivalent experience preferred.

• 6+ years in IT product or portfolio management or project management

• 8+ years in previous project management roles with an emphasis on program, product or P & L management. 
• Experience in Risk Management

• Previous experience managing large IT bodies of work in a complex enterprise environment.

• Ability to grasp technical concepts quickly, solid ability to translate technical verbiage into easily understandable language for non-technical audiences.

• Communicates difficult concepts and negotiates with others to adopt a different point of view

• Ability to influence others to achieve alignment and direction on projects and technical solutions

• Oversee and coordinate dependencies across the programs and projects within the portfolio; identify and remediate risks and issues or facilitate the escalation of such.

• Experience operating in an agile/scrum context.

• Strong analytical skills and ability to synthesize multiple types and sources of information into
