You Will

Reporting to the Dir, Customer Information Management and Operations, you will lead team to design customer information including:

  • Help develop frameworks, methodology and processes to set up and supplement new customer information
  • Curate and develop customer information to ensure accuracy
  • Research customer segments; test/pilot research of industry segments and share/transfer to Customer Growth Strategy teams.
  • Design customer information– which elements matter most for which type of customers, which elements of data are gatherable, what frameworks will we use to determine customer attributes
  • Work with and guide the customer information designers, analysts and researchers to define elegant and forward-looking solutions consistent with the CIM vision and needs
  • Provide review and input on the development of the CIM logical data model
  • Provide expert hands-on direction to ETL, data migration and integration activities, including approach, frameworks, transformation requirements and specifications definition to our technology partners for software necessary to implement CIM and related maintenance and enhancement processes
  • Curate and supplement customer information for specific areas. Test and understand accuracy of essential elements of customer information in present and future-state. Share insights with partners throughout the organization
  • Determine the most accurate and efficient ways to gather different parts of information. Partner with customer information operations and partners to do so.
  • Develop process and approach to study industry segments and collect useful information that can be used for guiding growth. Share/ transfer with Customer Growth Strategy teams

You Have

  • Undergraduate degree in economics, information systems, statistics or equivalent subject
  • Experience conducting research on customers
  • Comfortable with large datasets and analytical tools, such as SAS, SQL, R
  • Experience of performing data conversion, migration & harmonization
  • Expertise in ETL, data transformation and data standardization, including evaluation and integration of external data sources
  • Think through and solve complex problems
  • Process-oriented thinking to design customer information models
  • Design and execution of large-scale projects
  • Translate complex issues into understandable terms for partners and decision makers across the organization; will need to combine and update senior leadership with important findings

Work Environment

  • Position located in downtown Chicago or Lake Forest; ability to be in office full-time to lead team
  • Up to 20% travel may be asked to travel to customer locations, vendor locations, conferences


  • You will contribute to the success and accuracy of Grainger's customer information, which will be one of the primary assets of the company.
  • When proved successful, this information model may be used as a best practice model
  • Manage customer information budget (exact amount TBD; likely grow to as the business scales)
