Primary Function
The Senior Manager, Corporate Social Responsibility and External Affairs leads the execution of the company’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) efforts including managing the development of the annual CSR Report and CSR Website, designing auditable processes and systems related to cross-function non-financial data collection, and leading the cross-functional CSR Working Group, as the Company looks to evolve the program for all key stakeholders. In addition, this position plays a key role in the internal and external communication of Grainger’s CSR program overall.

 

 

 

Principal Duties & Responsibilities

CSR Program Management

  • Continue to advance the CSR program in a matter that makes sense for the Company and its key stakeholders.
  • Design auditable processes and systems related to cross-function non-financial data collection.
  • Consult, influence and contribute to the development, management and implementation of cross-functional Corporate Social Responsibility strategies and programs.
  • Lead the company’s cross-functional CSR Working Group, including responsibility for tracking goals and metrics.
  • Serve as Grainger’s CSR subject matter expert. Stay abreast of emerging CSR trends and best practices; represent Grainger’s CSR efforts to both internal and external audiences.

CSR Communications

  • Lead production of the company's CSR report and website. Plan and oversee the writing of accurate content and ensure quality and timeliness of all written material.
  • Lead review and response to stakeholder inquiries and investor related CSR analysis and indices.
  • Support integration of CSR initiatives within the business in a manner that helps drive opportunities for the Grainger sales force and the company overall.
  • Help identify and support opportunities to communicate Grainger’s CSR story internally and externally, including integrating CSR into existing corporate channels and materials.

 

 

 

Education & Experience

Competencies:

  • Deep technical expertise and a demonstrated understanding of best-practice CSR programs (includes an understanding of GRI and science-based targets), and the role CSR plays in corporate reputation. Knowledge of CSR processes and operations.
  • Advanced project management skills with experience leading complex, multi-stakeholder projects. Proven ability to independently manage deadlines and details and deliver high quality work in a fast-paced environment.
  • Understanding of the nonprofit sector and corporate philanthropy.
  • Strong business acumen, understanding the benefit of CSR for to a corporation’s success and reputation.
  • Analytical – able to gather, analyze, package and make thoughtful recommendations based on insights from data. Ability to think strategically and systemically, seeing a multitude of relationships, priorities and opportunities. 
  • Work directly with the data owners to ensure they have a solid understanding of reporting needs and are providing all required data quarterly. Streamline data collection process by ensuring that data collected for CSR Reporting purposes can apply to broader disclosures. Create recommendations to ensure business is utilizing data and auditing in the most efficient manner.
  • Build and maintain relationships with other CSR Reporting entities, including but not limited to CDP, Dow Jones, Newsweek, and Bloomberg. Advise business on reporting needs to meet these additional disclosures.
  • Create recommendations that will increase Grainger’s rankings within additional disclosures, including but not limited to CDP, MSCI, Sustainalytics and Dow Jones Sustainability Index.
  • Develop a central data repository for Grainger’s non-financial data. Streamline the input of that data from cross-functional data owners.
  • Help develop a CSR dashboard for functional leaders and the executive team.
  • Create quarterly progress reports against CSR targets and required data. Provide regular progress reports to Investor Relations team.
  • Ability to interact with internal and external stakeholders at all levels as a collaborative and strategic partner. Strong influence and collaboration skills.
  • Ability to serve as an ambassador and spokesperson of Grainger’s CSR efforts internally and externally.
  • Excellent judgment and creative problem solving skills, including negotiation and conflict resolution.
  • Proven success working in a matrix environment, influencing without direct authority, and leading large scale, complex initiatives.
  • Self-reliant, proactive, assertive, results-oriented, problem solver.
  • Ability to handle sensitive or proprietary company information in a confidential manner.

 Experiences:

  • Minimum of seven years of experience in corporate social responsibility/corporate citizenship; F500 experience is preferred. Must have hands-on experience in CSR communications, and public reporting and knowledge of CSR best practices, processes and operations.
  • BA/BS or equivalent preferred

 

 

Work Environment

Travel Requirements: Must be able to travel within and outside the US; up to 20%, depending on business need.
