Position Description


*This role typically is located in either our downtown Chicago office or our Lake Forest headquarters, but due to COVID-19 will be fully virtual until further notice.  Once these office locations have a return to work plan, the team member will be required to be on-site.


Primary Function:


Grainger’s inventory planning team manages over 10 million SKU’s and $1 billion in inventory across 500 DC’s and branches in North America.

The Senior Analyst, Inventory Optimization and Advanced Analytics is responsible for creating solutions using big data, mathematics, operations research and machine learning.  These analytics-based solutions would be used to improve how Grainger decides where, when and how much inventory should be placed that aligns with strategic goals and keeping customers happy.


Principle Duty:


  • Use operations research, statistical methods, mathematical models and tools to understand, predict and improve inventory and supply chain flows and processes.
  • Develop flexible, scalable inventory models that identify cost and service opportunities for stocking methodologies
  • Articulate the cost and service impacts of strategic initiatives/projects
  • Support department and company initiatives through advanced modeling, optimization and data analysis
  • Collaborate with teams across the supply chain to identify improvement opportunities leveraging advanced analytics and mathematical models.
  • Apply knowledge and business judgment to identify opportunities and quantify impact.
  • Examples of projects could be related to demand, supply and inventory optimization and predictive analytics.  Create dynamic solutions using statistical models, operations research and advanced analytics.
  • Own the process and thought leadership of transforming data into actionable insights and recommendations. Present clear and concise results.
  • Own the end-to-end delivery process that encompasses research, design, testing, scaling and implementation. 
  • Mentor junior team members for their development and growth.

Position Requirements:

  • Graduate degree (MS or equivalent) in Statistics, Mathematics, Operations Research, Industrial Engineering or a related quantitative field preferred
  • Supply chain and inventory planning, forecasting and optimization knowledge preferred
  • 3-5 years of experience in related field preferred.
  • Be data driven and experience with analytical querying languages (e.g. SQL), scripting languages (e.g. Python), statistics software (e.g. R, SAS, Matlab) and data visualization software (e.g. Tableau)
  • Experience with large scale optimization solvers (e.g. Gurobi, LINDO) preferred
  • Experience applying statistical and machine learning algorithms (regression, clustering, decision trees, multivariate and logistic regression, kNN, kMeans, deep learning, etc.) preferred.
  • Experience articulating ambiguous business questions and using quantitative modeling techniques to arrive at a solution
  • Experience processing, filtering, validating, and presenting large quantities of data (Millions to Billions of rows)
  • Travel may be required up to 15% (may include both domestic and international)
