Primary Function:

Develops strategies and tactics to optimize multi-channel product search experience.  The role includes direct management of search optimization tools, terms management tools, business processes, and product search analytics. 


Manages strategic relationships with teams in the following departments: Merchandising & Supplier Management, Grainger Technology Group, Marketing, Finance, and other teams that impact the onsite search experience.


Principal Duties & Responsibilities:

This role is primarily responsible for the performance, accuracy, and effectiveness of the onsite search engine.  Additional responsibilities include:

•           Oversee all search optimization efforts, including improvements to keyword search logic and relevancy strategies

•           Establish and consistently refine the process to create and manage relevant search terms for new and existing products; ensure consistency in approach and delivery

•           Lead efforts to introduce new onsite search features and functionality to the Grainger websites; collaborate with project teams to create a best-in-class search experience

•           Establish and implement product data standards and best practices to optimize the onsite search accuracy

•           Develop search measurement plans and dashboards; monitor search metrics and KPIs

•           Review and interpret onsite search feedback; translate findings into strategic action

•           Benchmark the onsite search experience versus its competitors; translate findings into strategic action

•           Provide leadership and direction as needed to Onsite Search Analysts

•           Identify and evaluate key third-party onsite search vendors when appropriate


Preferred Education & Experience:

Must have 5-7 years of experience in large data-focused organizations with complex business processes and systems

  • 5-7 years ecommerce experience
  • Demonstrated expertise in analysis, including web analytics
  • Prefer experience with faceted search engines
  • Understanding of Product Information Management systems and methodologies
  • Experience with User Acceptance Testing methodology
  • Experience with Agile software development
  • Strong detail orientation
  • Proven systemic thinking skills
  • Proven ability to work with complex data sets
  • Outstanding communication skills including the ability to translate detailed technical information to easily understood concepts, decisions, actions, or recommendations
  • Strong Business acumen
  • Demonstrated ability to influence and ensure alignment with cross functional stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability to translate strategy into tactical actions
  • Experience working with third party vendors and external partners
