Position Details:


The Senior Manager, DC Engineering provides project oversight, guidance, and assistance to Managers and other engineers within the department. Manage multiple, highly complex projects simultaneously, while providing solution-based recommendations and decisions, solving for unique challenges that comes with growth.

Work cross-functionally to ensure our Distribution Centers (DCs) achieve or exceed the financial goals by solving multifaceted problems and improving current state processes. Identifies visionary, robust, and practical technology to improve Grainger's Supply Chain by lowering cost, improving service, and enhancing the customer experience.

Create engineering standards and implements storage and throughput solutions to accommodate up to 550K items and $100M in inventory in any given facility. Collaborate with DC's, Inventory, Transportation, Branch Network, and Network Design teams.


You will report to the Director, DC Engineering Design Optimization and this role is located in Lake Forest, IL.


You Will:


  • Lead a team of 4-8 employees to provide analysis and project support, which includes Managers, Sr. Analysts, and Analysts
  • Support the Distribution Centers and Supply Chain partners to identify opportunities to improve overall processes including storage solutions
  • Partnership with DCOE, Network Design, Transportation, Inventory, Branch network, DC Finance,
  • Identify potential solutions including current and new technologies to:
    • Improve availability, storage utilization, and operational costs for DC storage
    • Improve DC operational costs while improve departmental productivity
    • Improve workflow inefficiencies
    • Emphasis on continuous improvement to improve overall Global Supply Chain operations
  • Improve/design process and layout of the DCs and Branches
  • Support DC/Finance Sr. leaders through LPH – Lines per Hour bridge activities
  • Provide a stair-step project plan for improvements
  • Provide and ensure Return on investment's are met for all improvement projects
  • DC Innovation
    • Review new technology from an automation and software standpoint and project Return on investment
    • Workflow optimization estimated to save $18M in labor expense over 4 years after implementation
    • Provide an industrial engineering point of view on DC operations
    • Pilot and managing project spend
  • Allocate resources across multiple buildings across the North American DC Operations
  • Approve analysis that mold the future of Supply Chain Operations
  • Hire and retain team members at the Manager, Sr. Analyst, and Analyst levels
  • Accomplish strategic projects that support business growth on time and on budget
  • Research, recommend, and pilot new technologies to improve DC operational costs
  • Generating creative solutions, translates concepts and information into projects, uses feedback to modify designs, applies design principles to all projects.
  • Ensuring the Grainger network (Branch/DC's) has space capacity to improve service levels
    • Scope/plan and complete capital projects to create additional storage capacity
    • Work with inventory to provide cost savings projects to improve DC labor constraints
  • Prepare MOVE DC's to be systemically and physically ready for EWM warehouse management system
    • EWM conversion project cost exceeds $1M


You Have:


  • Bachelor's degree in Supply Chain Management, Finance, Industrial Engineering or Logistics. MBA highly desirable.
  • 10 years + experience in distribution operations, logistics, or industrial engineering
  • Hire and develop top talent and demonstrate Grainger Edge principals
  • Use analytics to make decision even when data is limited
  • Experience working with organizing, analyzing large data sets
  • Create, develop, and manager cross-functional business relationships to facilitate organization changes
  • Create, test, modify, and implement data simulation models
  • Communicate and present to all leadership levels
  • Identify innovation trends and business opportunities
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and AutoCAD and Teradata
  • Experience conducting time studies and the development of engineered performance standards
  • Up to 75% travel in the US, Canada and Mexico
