Position Description

Primary Function

Data Science application areas span across Recommender Systems, Machine Learning, Deep Learning, Resource Optimization Solutions, NLP etc. Projects often encompass research, design, coding, testing, scaling and implementation. The ideal candidate for this position is someone with strong programming experience, someone with strong analytical and problem-solving skills and someone who is willing to research approaches to tackle new problems. The candidate should be able to work independently and be comfortable reaching out to colleagues in the larger team.  

Principal Duties & Responsibilities

  • Data mining and exploration, model development and evaluation, solution deployment, measurement, and tracking
  • Research and develop data driven solutions to new and challenging business problems
  • Build machine learning algorithms including Regression, Decision Trees, Bayesian, Clustering, SVM, Neural networks and recommender system
  • Use tools like R, Python, Spark, Scala to perform data processing, model building, performance evaluation and deployment
  • Build the infrastructure required for optimal extraction, transformation, and loading of data from a wide variety of data sources using SQL, Python / R and AWS technologies
  • Foster innovation and creativity for the development of analytical tools or analyses to evaluate the evolving needs of the business that drive profitable share gain
  • Explore and visualize data to understand the most relevant features that impact Grainger’s business

 

Position Requirements:

Required Skills & Experience

  • Masters / PhD in Data Science / Advanced Analytics, Computer Science, Applied Mathematics, or any Engineering discipline
  • 2+ years’ experience in coding (Python, Spark, R, Java, Scala) and building machine learning solutions for diverse business problems (outside of coursework)
  • Ability to build, test, and validate machine learning applications in Python, R, or other programming language
  • Ability to explore data sets and identify data transformation and data quality needs for targeted applications
  • High proficiency in a query language such as SQL, SparkSQL
  • Experience with Web Applications, REST APIs 
  • Outstanding problem solving and analytical skills
  • Curiosity, enthusiasm, positive attitude, and passion to build. Willingness to learn and research new concepts

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with cloud compute (preferably AWS), schedulers (e.g. Airflow), containerization (Docker) and Orchestration (Kubernetes)
  • Experience productionizing real-time machine learning models
  • Hands-on software engineering experience
