Security Engineer II

Primary Function:


As a Security Operations Engineer, you will manage the operational health of multiple security tools and infrastructures, determine maintenance requirements, work with vendors to ensure optimal operations, generate and execute daily or routine maintenance and administrative procedures, and work with the operations team to execute the mission of securing Grainger. You will also work on managing and mitigating threats and vulnerabilities in the Grainger environment as time permits.

The right candidate is independent with excellent technical skills, a deep background in enterprise infrastructure, tool administration and operations. Candidate will be experienced with managing ongoing operations for key enterprise assets and ensuring they are operating according to best practices and in an optimal state.


Principal Duties & Responsibilities:


Understand and maintain multiple infrastructures including Palo Alto NextGen firewalls. Cisco Adaptative Security Appliances, Cisco Identity Service Engine, Infoblox and various VPN client software.  Can learn and integrate new technologies selected through the continuous technology lifecycle management at Grainger.

Work with product vendors on a regular basis to ensure proper functionality of installed infrastructures and tools, implementation of best practices, provide feedback to vendors.

Develop routine maintenance and administrative activities and document them in work instructions.

Monitor supported systems to ensure that scheduled tasks and routine administrative activities are executed properly.

Work with security architecture, and peer architecture organizations, to provide administrative and operational feedback in their design and product selection process to ensure that the operational needs are being met.

Engage in continuous learning and development to continue to develop expertise.

Cross-Train, and be an expert resource, on Security tool and infrastructure theory and approach.





Bachelor’s degree in Information Systems or related degree, or equivalent job experience.



• 2 years of experience in enterprise infrastructure and tool management and administration, implementation and troubleshooting across all computer platforms.

• 2 years of experience in Security technology implementation and troubleshooting across all computer platforms (Can count a bachelor’s degree in CS, or InfoSec as 1.5 years of experience)

• 5 or more years required of combined IT and security work experience with a broad exposure to infrastructure/network and multi-platform environments.

• Experience and hands-on working knowledge with a variety of security technologies and processes including but not limited to Firewall (such as Check Point, Fortinet, Cisco ASA, Palo Alto, Juniper), VPN, SEIM, IDS/IPS (such as SourceFire, HPTippingPoint), HIDS, malware analysis and protection, content filtering, logical access controls and content filtering technologies.

• Understanding of Cloud solution best practices and integration techniques

• Good understanding of Risk and Compliance framework, regulatory compliance (Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX) and PCI-DSS)

• Highly self-motivated

• Ability to effectively prioritize and execute tasks in a complex environment

• Solid understanding of standard business processes including Change Management, Problem Management, Work Prioritization, Quality Assurance, and Continuous Improvement best practices, etc.
