Position Details: 

 

As a Software Engineer, your role is to contribute broadly across the Grainger developer community by staying in tune with current development practices and patterns,  exploring new and evolving best practices, and driving adoption of those best practices.    This role will interact across the entire Grainger Technology Group functions including Architecture, Security, Storage, Virtualization, SAP Functional, Cloud, and eCommerce.    

 

You will support all areas of Grainger’s business including Sales, Finance, Contact Centers, Branches, Distribution Centers & Digital channels. You will champion and influence the design and transformation of foundational infrastructure applications to a more effective Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) and resiliency. You will be a critical voice in driving the roadmap to modernize, streamline, standardize and strengthen performance, reliability, robustness and scalability across the SAP ecosystem.  

 

Reporting to the Sr. Director of Business Platform Engineering, you will be based in Lake Forest, IL.   

 

You Will: 

  • Assess, document, and educate the broader Grainger SAP developer community on best practices and emerging development patterns and evolve sensible defaults.   

  • Research, document, and present new technologies through architectural review processes 

  • Operationalize governance of and establish centers of excellence for new technologies and tools 

  • Develop  standards and best practices  and drive adoption within the broader Grainger developer community.    

  • Have expertise across broad technical and functional domains and advise cross-organization developing and deploying reuseable components.  

  • Identify broad opportunities for improvement to increase efficiency and effectiveness while minimizing unnecessary customization.  

  • Champion the deployment of SAP “clean core” enhancement patterns to ensure upgrade resiliency of customizations.  

  • Identify the need for and lead knowledge sharing sessions. 

  • Be an escalation point for the most complex technical challenges   

 

 

You Have: 

  • 10+ years development experience.  

  • 10+ years ABAP development experience      

  • B.S. in Computer Science / MIS or related field 

  • Proficiency in S/4 HANA, ABAP, CDS, Fiori, RAP and JAVA Development. 

  • Proficiency in Cloud Computing 

  • Proficiency in the SAP Business Technology Platform 

  • Proficiency in SAP upgrade processes and the use of SPDD/SPAU 

  • Proficiency running SAP readiness checks and assessing the results to communicate impacts to leadership 

  • A continuous improvement mindset to drive more effective, automated software delivery 

  • The ability to work autonomously in areas of ambiguity, bringing clarity to explain complex technical concepts to all levels of the organization 

  • Demonstrated experience exploring, facilitating approval of,  and deploying and operationalizing new technology platforms and practices.  

  • Demonstrated experience assessing off the shelf solutions as alternatives to custom development.
