The Portfolio Manager is responsible for overseeing a defined portfolio and ensuring that all priorities are adequately reflected and tracked. The Portfolio Manager is assigned to an IT team and is responsible for breaking down initiatives into user stories by working with strategic business partners and other portfolio managers. The Portfolio Manager is responsible for making sure their team is working on the appropriate priorities by managing the backlog for the team. 

Portfolio Managers are responsible for managing the intake of new demand, the prioritization of efforts, and execution of the release plan through delivery.  They provide input to a balanced scorecard to their respective portfolio owners, reflecting all aspects to include business goals, financials and operational concerns. 

The Portfolio Manager manages the future demand, defines sequencing and dependencies, works with resource teams to determine availability, and adjust priorities accordingly.  They ensure that the programs, projects and products within the portfolio are being properly managed, placed and prioritized. They serve as the initial point of contact between IT and business units for a defined portfolio. 
 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Supports a defined portfolio.
  • Usually functions with autonomy; requires occasional guidance.
  • Portfolio Roadmap: Assists with the capturing and articulation of the Portfolio Roadmap.  Helps identify dependencies and conflicts.
  • Portfolio Priorities: Works with stakeholders to articulate the estimates and consolidate the priority across multiple demands and teams.
  • Intake: Facilitates the capturing and review of new requests and shepherds them through the necessary process steps.
  • Use Cases/User Stories – writes stories and ensures integrity of stories.  Writes and validates acceptance criteria.  Grooms and maintains use cases.
  • Responsible for managing the demand vs capacity of their team(s); actively resolves discrepancies with all parties.
  • Portfolio Reports; Generates and reviews reports, to include financial forecasts.
     
    REQUIRED EXPERIENCES AND COMPETENCIES:  
    - 8+ years previous management roles with an emphasis on program, product or P&L management
    - Prior experience in product or portfolio management is a plus
    - Previous experience managing large bodies of work
    - Excellent communication and conflict resolution skills
    - Experience operating in an agile context

    - Strong organizational and relationship management skills
    - Must have a bachelor’s degree
    - Must have a technology background
    - Some travel required
