BASIC FUNCTION: 

The Infrastructure Engineers ensure that the IT infrastructure is sufficiently robust, scalable, and efficient to deliver the integrated services underlying the physical environment that supports the processes, physical resources, and operators required for developing, integrating, operating, and sustaining IT applications and support services.

They build, test, implement, configure, tune and support the IT infrastructure in the Cloud and on-premise, including server platforms, storage systems, middleware infrastructure, network, and client technologies.

They pursue the physical design, implementation, and support of major automation solutions in a multiplatform environment, make recommendations for improved usability of automated tools, and identify opportunities for increased adoption of orchestration technologies.

At Grainger, our team members have an opportunity to work in one of the largest SAP-centric and complex, 24x7, E-commerce environments and gain knowledge and experience with many SAP and other application modules running on-prem and in the Cloud. Our database team is seeking a Database Engineer to primarily support Oracle databases with opportunities to expand skill set in Exadata, Linux Administration, ZFS Storage Appliance, SQL Server, AWS EC2/RDS, PostgreSQL, and Teradata.

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Build, configure and maintain hybrid IT systems: installation, configuration, and maintenance of systems. Assist with integrating services across Cloud and data center. Assists in the prioritization of requirements and matching of resources with requirements.
  • Automation: Leverages established frameworks for automation and CI/CD and contributes improvements.
  • Scripting: Creates and maintains scripts to automate repetitive tasks and support automated workflows
  • Configuration management: Assists in establishing baselines and configuration control. Updates CMDB.
  • Infrastructure standards and practices: Assists in writing and researching standards and procedures for infrastructure solutions
  • Monitoring: Assists in monitoring infrastructure to troubleshoot issues and ensure SLAs are being met.
  • Documentation: Assists in documenting new or modified infrastructure solutions.

 

REQUIRED EXPERIENCES AND COMPETENCIES:  
 

  • Bachelor’s degree in information technology, computer science, or related field.
  • 4+ years experience with Oracle databases (11g, 12c, 18c, or 19c).
    • 1-4 years of experience with SQL Server, PostgreSQL, or Teradata databases is a plus.
  • Must be self-motivated with strong team, interpersonal and communication skills (both verbal and written), and maintain a positive attitude. Moderate autonomy, usually supervised depending on the project being worked on.
  • Strong problem-solving, analytical skills, debugging/resolution skills, and the ability to think algorithmically.
  • Solid understanding of mission-critical production environments, including the requirement for high availability and team-oriented 24x7 support capabilities.
  • Strong time management skills with the ability to prioritize multiple projects simultaneously in an Agile environment.

Oracle Database

  • Hands-on experience in configuration, creation, and management of Database instances, storage structures, schema objects, monitoring, and managing Database resources.
  • Able to deploy, patch, upgrade, backup, and recover databases.
  • Solid knowledge of Database backup and recovery tools (DataPump and RMAN).
  • Proficient in deploying, monitoring, and evaluating database security and integrity.
  • Contributes to determining, enforcing, documenting, and organizing database policies, procedures, and standards.

Oracle Real Application Clusters (RAC)

  • Any experience with Exadata is a plus.
  • Experience with Oracle RAC and ASM (installation, configuration, administration, upgrade, patching) on a Linux environment.
  • Able to useg CRSCTL and SRVCTL utilities to manage the Clusterware, ASM, databases, and database services.
  • Proficient in leveraging ADR, TFA, CHA, orachk/exachk, and oswatcher to collect diagnostic data, investigate issues.

Database Performance

  • Able to measure database performance, gather statistics, and compare DB performance over time.
  • Assists with proactive monitoring, performance emergencies, bottleneck elimination.
  • Skilled in using analysis tools such as ASH, AWR, ADDM, SQL Plan Baselines, and SQL Profiles.
  • Able to monitor and trace SQL statements, explain and display/compare and pin execution plans.

Data Guard

 

  • Assists in creating and managing physical, logical, and snapshot standby databases, including failovers and RMAN file management in a Data Guard configuration.
  • Assists with Data Guard standby database configurations, services, broker, and protection modes.
  • Assists reviewing, testing, updating, and documenting disaster recovery/business continuity plans for production databases.

Automation and Development

 

  • Knowledgeable of automation concepts, tools, and DevOps.
  • Intermediate knowledge of SQL scripting and entry ability with PL/SQL is required.
  • Entry/intermediate knowledge of shell scripting (ksh/bash) is required.
  • Knowledge of one or more programming languages such as Python is a plus.

 

Oracle Enterprise Manager Cloud Control (OEM)
 

  • Able to install, upgrade, configure, discover, monitor, and manage OEM 13c.
  • Skilled in using OEM for maintenance activities, resource monitoring, scheduling, capacity planning, baselining DB performance, proactive monitoring, and solving performance problems.

Additional Requirement

  • Strong desire to learn and expand skill set in Oracle Exadata (Database Machine Administrator), ZFS Storage Appliance, Splunk, AWS (CLI, EC2, RDS), Python, ksh/bash, Linux administration, SOX compliance, and DevOps automation.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Provide 24x7 production database support on a rotational basis.
  • Works collaboratively with Architects and Analysts and assist in developing the database design and build solutions that meet the defined functional, quality, performance, security, and architectural standards.
  • Works with Technical Support Specialists to advise on and address escalated level 2 and 3 support issues.
  • Participates in quality assurance reviews when necessary and assists with performance optimization.
