Primary Function:

Responsible for providing leadership and direction to the Database Engineering team.

  • Oversees the system engineering team(s) for Grainger's critical business application systems and software.  Maximizing system effectiveness, operational efficiency, availability and other key service levels, in support of shared business goals.
  • Plans and manages the activities of highly-skilled Database engineers, hires, retains, and develops key talent.  Evaluates team staffing strategy, training needs and skills maturities/gaps.
  • Contributes to and manages Database team budget.  Contributes to departmental long-range strategic planning including lifecycle planning, investment initiatives and cost reduction activities.
  • Leads cross functional teams on projects which enable the technical and process changes necessary to ensure the continued high-quality delivery of business systems operations.
  • Responsible for relationship management with downstream internal and external customers / business partners and upstream business partners, vendors and technology suppliers.
  • Provides strategic direction and leadership to the Infrastructure Application Engineering team to ensure alignment with corporate goals and objectives.
  • Ensure 100% compliance with regulatory (SOX, PCI) requirements and assessment targets.  Manage completion of regular compliance control activities in coordination with Internal Controls and external Audit partners.

 

Principal Duties & Responsibilities

Manage

6-10 Team members and 0-8 contractors &/or 3rd party managed contracted service

 

  • Provide guidance on team member performance in talent review meetings
  • Work with cross-functional partners to place team members in promotional and developmental opportunities
  • Coach team members to think through daily decisions about their jobs
  • Set clear deliverables around requirements and timeline -  assignments / work for the team
  • Participate in cross-functional projects to gain perspective on other parts of the business
  • Lead projects with clear timelines and deliverables
  • Deliver communication strategies for change management initiatives
  • Create mitigation strategies for assignments that have unintended impacts on processes, departments, or business units
  • Prepare team members for promotions and cross-functional moves

 

Preferred Education & Experience

BA or BS

7-10 years

 

Seeking a collaborative, positive leader who is passionate about creating and fostering high-performing teams, never satisfied with status-quo and proactively looking for the next challenge.  This leader has strong emotional intelligence and compassion, champions diversity and can motivate individuals according to their needs.  This leader should have a proficient background in relevant technologies, including enterprise servers (Windows, Linux, unix), Database (Oracle DB running on Exadata, MS SQL, PostgreSQL), cloud technologies (AWS, Azure, Google) and can apply Agile thinking, DevOps concepts and continuous improvement to each.  Strong preference for experience with SAP Administration and SAP Security concepts.  This leader can also understand the organization's overall business strategy and can directly make connections with our technology strategy.
