We are seeking an Infrastructure Engineer who would join our team that enables solutions which keep Grainger working while providing a superior customer experience and the means to stay ahead of the competition.

  • We support ~30 applications related to pricing, archiving, warehouse management, audit, vending ATMs, accounts receivable, accounts payable, cash processing, branch and DC printing, credit card tokenization, address validation, catalog processing, badging and finger print security, robotics, security cameras, records management, facility incident management, asset management, license management.
  • We install and maintain third party applications needed to keep non-SAP systems running.
  • We monitor our systems 24/7/365.
  • We provide 24/7/365 support to our applications’ users.

We keep applications running with the goal to provide the latest systems to our business partners while continuously enhancing our services and automating solutions.


As an Infrastructure Engineer, the successful candidate will be designing, deploying, configuring, and managing applications in medium to large enterprises. Examples of mission critical applications designed and deployed by the team include Manhattan Warehouse Management, BancTec PCR/PCA, IXOS, Paymetric, Stibo Step, Vendavo, and VPSX.  The candidate will also set up a robust system monitoring using Splunk, Zenoss, and other tools.  Excellent documentation and communication skills a must.  The successful candidate for this position will be expected to perform typical day-to-day tasks autonomously requiring assistance with only the substantially complex tasks. Minimum education requirements: no less than a 4-year degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or other relevant technical discipline. Certification and/or training is expected but not required in cases of established experience.



Principal Duties & Responsibilities: 


Infrastructure Engineer responsibilities include:

  • Supporting the infrastructure to enable mission critical, highly available/resilient enterprise applications
    • Installation, maintenance, and upgrade as required by the business
    • Set up and continuous monitoring
    • Develop and document processes and procedures for the installation, maintenance, and upgrade
    • Document the new or modified infrastructure environment and solutions
  • Establish and maintain a high level of trust and confidence in the departments’ knowledge of and concern for the business partners’ issues; facilitate communications between IT and the business.
  • Strive to keep our infrastructure cost effective, efficient, and of high quality.
  • Stay current in the Infrastructure Engineering space including industry trends, strategies, and products to ensure that Grainger’s assets are effectively and efficiently utilized.
  • Ensure the application infrastructure is up and running and performing with maximum efficiency 24x7x365
    • Provide 24x7 support on a rotational basis; Off hours/on call support as required with prompt incidence response.
    • Develop robust monitoring and alerting to ensure the application infrastructure remains in good health (e.g. Disk usage, CPU/Memory usage, Performance, etc.)
  • Work with the GCC (Global Command Center)/SSC (System Support Center) to resolve issues if escalated and ensure that appropriate documentation is in place to enable first call resolution
  • Develop permanent 'fix' to address failure of capabilities/features or a work around until fix is identified and made available.
  • Create scripts when there are automation opportunities to increase efficiency and decrease outage MTTR
  • Collaborate with other technical/business teams to improve application resiliency/uptime and speed of application deployment
  • Ensure operational adherence to key standards and repeatable processes such as Change Management, Problem Management, Work Prioritization, Technology Adoption and Retirement, Technology Standards, etc.
  • Support the organization in its development and implementation methodologies for analysis, and installation of infrastructure technologies.


Preferred Education & Experience: 


  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science/Engineering or related field/equivalent experience.  Advanced degree preferred.
  • 3-5 years of IT experience in infrastructure systems engineering.
  • 3-5 years of experience supporting Unix/Linux and/or Windows based applications; ability to install, configure, troubleshoot, and maintain the applications
  • Working experience/Knowledge of Windows and Red Hat Linux operating systems
  • Have expertise or knowledge in building automation solutions using any scripting language such as Unix Shell Scripting, PowerShell, Or Python
  • Must have the ability to multi-task in a very fast-paced environment.
  • Support experience in a large, global enterprise environment
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills including:
    • Assertive but diplomatic with colleagues, Sr Mgt, and vendors to drive quick resolution to an outage, project task completion, and informative status updates.
    • Excellent technical documentation skills to reduced outage impact times on system issues.
    • Leverage company provided collaboration tools like Microsoft Teams and Slack to drive timely communications and documentation across different Grainger teams/stakeholders.
  • Strong grasp of automation tools and DevOps concepts
  • Experience with implementing projects using SCRUM/Agile methodologies
  • Vendor management and negotiations experience in development of effective partnerships with vendors plus.
  • Ability to effectively adapt to rapidly changing technologies and apply them to business needs.
  • Deep desire to expand skill set and excel in meeting business requirements
  • High curiosity to understand how things work from the ground up, seek different points of view, find better ways to solve problems while embracing the continuous improvement notion
  • Solid teamwork and interpersonal skills to work cross functionally.
  • Strong oral and written communications skills with an ability to present and discuss technical information in a way that establishes rapport, persuades others, and gains understanding to all levels within the organization (e.g.  customers, employees, and senior management.)

  • Ability to handle high pressure situations and quickly respond and resolve production problems.
  • Time management skills to balance priorities and deliver assignments on time and within budget
