Position Description:


Grainger is seeking a Data Engineer IV for our Data and Analytics team. The Data and Analytics team's primary mission is to enable analytics and operational reporting by centralizing and integrating high quality, trusted corporate data on a highly performance data warehouse platform. The Data Engineer IV role specifically focusses on designing, building, and maintaining ETL and the systems upon which it runs. This role works closely with architects, analysts, data scientists and others to build solutions that combine data from many of our core data sources while also maintaining the systems upon which we host data, develop code, perform ETL, schedule, and perform database workload management.  



Duties and Responsibilities:



  • Design, implement and maintain reporting databases.
  • Build and orchestrate imports and exports including transformations to meet business requirements.
  • Writes and maintains documentation to describe program development, logic, coding, testing, changes, and corrections.
  • Design and implement processes to ensure data integrity and standardization.
  • Implements data reliability, efficiency, and quality improvements.
  • Collaboration and communication with stakeholders.
  • Optimize databases for performance and scalability.
  • Performs system maintenance such as configuration, system upgrades, software installation, etc.
  • Troubleshoots issues with both systems and data to resolution.
  • Designs and implements security strategies to keep sensitive data safe. 



Position Requirements:



  • 10+ years of experience within Data Warehousing and Analytics with demonstrable experience in data integration and data warehouse projects.
  • Experience leading multiple data integration efforts of external data sources (ex: acquisitions, mergers, etc.).
  • Experience partnering with internal departments (Supply Chain, Marketing, Finance, HR) to define business requirements.
  • Ability to translate business requirements into technical requirements and produce required source-to-target data mappings.
  • Ability to bring complex concepts into the organization and mentor others.
  • Attention to detail, excellent problem-solving ability, and strong communication skills (written and verbal).
  • 5+ years of experience with MPP databases and ETL. Teradata preferred (Teradata SQL, TPT scripts, Stored Procedures, BTEQ, etc).
  • Experience with Database workload management/resource allocation. TASM preferred.
  • 10+ years of experience with Linux including software installation, configuration, permissions, scheduling and common Linux tools like vim, awk, shell programming, etc.
  • Experience with AWS, Docker/Kubernetes.
  • Experience with advanced analytics and machine learning (R/Python).
  • Excellent analytical, troubleshooting, decision-making and presentation skills in a fast-paced team environment
  • Teradata Certified Professional preferred
  • Preferred experience in an environment that utilizes the following:  Teradata version 16+, Teradata Utilities (TPT, Fastload, Fastexport, etc), Linux shell (bash, sh, ksh, csh), Git, Jira, CI/CD (Jenkins, Bamboo,, etc), R, Python, AWS S3, Kubernetes, Business Objects, Tableau, PowerBI, Wherescape Red, Teradata Value Analyzer, SAP BW 7+
