Compensation
The anticipated base pay compensation range for this position is $95,000.00 to $158,400.00.

Position Details
The Warehouse Management Systems (WMS) team supports the technology that powers Grainger’s distribution centers and branch network for North America. We ensure the right products move efficiently through our supply chain to meet customer needs.
In this fast-paced and complex environment, our team builds and supports the systems that drive inventory movement, order fulfillment, warehouse automation, and network efficiency. We work closely with operations to deliver scalable, resilient solutions that enable growth and continuous improvement.
This team supports a variety of systems and software: SAP EWM 7.0, S/4 Hana for EWM, SAP WM, SAP GTS, Manhattan, Kafka, ConnectShip, LogistiVIEW, Dematic, and others.
We are seeking a Senior Business Systems Engineer with an Application Engineer DevOps focus to join our Warehouse Management Systems (WMS) engineering team. This role will lead the implementation, optimization, and support of systems that enable seamless parcel and freight shipping integration using ConnectShip and FedEx Ship Manager Server, tightly coupled with SAP EWM (both on-premise and S/4HANA cloud deployments) and Manhattan platforms. This position plays a key role in driving automation, reliability, and scalability of complex distribution operations across our supply chain ecosystem. You’ll be a hands-on contributor responsible for DevOps practices, configuration, coding, and operational support, ensuring critical integrations run securely, efficiently, and in compliance with business SLAs.

You will
- Design, configure and/or develop, deploy, optimize, monitor and improve systems and business applications. Clearly demonstrates understanding of the implications of their usage on the business.
- Contribute to capability roadmaps and conduct technology research for innovation and continuous improvement. Translate complex business requirements into detailed technical specifications and deliverables.
- Specialize in core technical and functional domain experience within respective team. Define nonfunctional requirements in accordance with engineering best practices (security, reliability, performance).
- Partner with administration and operational teams to improve key service practices. Document technical debt and waste. Develop sustainable feedback loops for continuous improvement. Build sustainable systems with monitoring and observability, and set standards for operating procedures.
- Support team activities (daily status meetings, tech huddles, desk checks) and pair with peers to work on stories.
- Regularly evaluate current business processes, applications, and systems to identify improvements that increase efficiency and effectiveness.
- Provide coaching and mentoring to junior engineers
You have
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
- 5+ years of configuration and/or development experience across a broad range of hardware and software products.
- Proficient ability to design, develop, test, and deploy applications/systems using proven technologies across multiple environments.
- Strong coding, debugging, and analytical skills, with the ability to write and maintain production-quality code.
- Experience with ConnectShip and compiled applications (e.g., Custom Shipping App, AMP interface for EWM/Manhattan).
- Experience with FedEx Ship Manager Server (backend shipping application).
- NET or Java development experience (critical for supporting ConnectShip modernization and AMP migration).
- Experience with scripting languages like PowerShell, Python, etc.
- Experience with Ansible as an automation engine for playbooks in YAML.
- Transportation and carrier knowledge (preferred), as this role often involves working closely with carrier-side integrations.
- Kafka, JSON, and other modern integration technologies a plus.
- Proficient troubleshooting and problem-solving skills across multiple systems.
- Experience with SAP HANA platforms and integration with external systems (WES/WCS) required.
- Ability to work with Infrastructure as Code, containerization, deployment, and scalability.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills; ability to bridge business and technical stakeholders.
- Comfortable working in agile, fast-paced, and warehouse/operations-driven environments.
- Ability to triage production issues and embed engineering best practices.
