Primary Function:

Managers play a leadership role in supporting Grainger’s strategy by assuring effective end-to-end processes and controls in addition to timely and accurate financials. Through extensive review, analysis, interpreting of financial metrics and benchmarking, they also deliver valuable insights to help instill a Controllership mindset across the organization. Managers are not only expected to lead a disciplined approach but are also empowered to seek creative solutions for their team members.


This position has various responsibilities, but primarily leading the Janesville and Panama tax reporting centers of excellence (“COE”) centers; establishing policies and procedures to ensure jurisdictional compliance timely and efficiently; leading on-boarding efforts of COE workstreams and determining appropriate work location and team member assignment and alignment; ensuring standard operating procedures are created, streamlined, and automated; leading a collaborative environment which provides team members with growth, development and advancement opportunities.  This role interfaces with both finance and non-finance professionals across multiple business units, providing tax and other support for business decisions.


This role supports Grainger’s strategy by being critical to the tax reporting process and will lead extensive preparation, review, and reporting, and provide a bridge to more complex analysis including balance sheet and P&L analytics, calculating and interpreting financial metrics per the rules and guidance of state tax, federal tax and international tax laws.


Principal Duties & Responsibilities:


  • Develop and formulate tax policies, procedures and goals for all tax COE workstreams
  • Identify, evaluate and implement systems and process enhancements to increase productivity and efficiency within the COE centers
  • Consult with other Tax team professionals on complex tax issues requiring assistance or unusual action.
  • Create and implement innovative projects to continuously improve business practices
  • Prepares monthly operating reports to management on status of COE initiatives
  • Provide leadership and direction to direct reports by offering constructive feedback to help develop staff into a high performing team
  • Accept new responsibilities as business needs change

Preferred Education & Experience: 

  • Minimum 5-8 years management/supervisory experience
  • Excellent analytical skills, intellectual curiosity, big picture thinking, ability to challenge the status quo and determine how controllership activities can be planned and executed more effectively and efficiently
  • Understanding end to end processes, identification of critical risks to assess whether controls are designed and operating effectively
  • Self- starter and ability to work independently, solve problems and achieve results while managing multiple priorities
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.  Ability to understand the details and effectively share with internal and external customers
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills and ability to build effective relationships and influence decision making

Work Environment:  

  • Does the job require travel?  10% travel is expected to manage teams in Janesville and Panama.  Utilization of remote meeting tools is encouraged to lead team.
  • Describe types of the decision made by this job. Determine tax exempts applicable to a customer based on the tax exemption certificate provided.  Determine appropriate corrective action to remediate tax billing errors.
