Position Details
Reporting to the Senior Manager of Data Science, the Principal Data Scientist will solve complex data intensive problems by creating perspectives on customers and marketplace dynamics that inform strategic choices. You will develop and deploy statistical and machine learning models that improve the effectiveness of our business operations as well as identify and measure the drivers of our performance.

You Will
- Build relationships between partners and the data science team; partner with the business to implement analytical solutions and contribute to go-to-market strategies
- Apply techniques such as classification, clustering, dimension reduction, regression, NLP, time series forecasting, and boosting to build explanatory, predictive, and prescriptive models appropriate for solving different business problems
- Design and conduct experiments, collect the data necessary to perform statistical hypothesis testing, and create inferences and recommendations
- Conduct exploratory data analysis and apply deep business knowledge to customer and marketplace data to uncover new business insights
- Present the materials necessary to communicate the results of analytical work and associated recommendations and influence the use of analytical recommendations
- Use your knowledge on Grainger’s business operations, go-to-market model, and the broader Maintenance, Repair, and Operations (MRO) market to identify white-space analytical opportunities
- Manipulate high-volume, high-dimensionality data from multiple sources, visualize patterns, anomalies, relationships, and trends, and perform feature engineering and selection
- Create the code to support large-scale data analyses, model development, model validation and deployment
- Mentor team members on project work; assist junior team members in developing new skills
You Have
- 7+ years of experience in analytics and data science roles
- BS in a technical field such as Statistics, Mathematics, Data Science, Applied Analytics, Operations Research, Applied Science or Engineering
- Proficient in usage of databases (e.g. Teradata, Snowflake, Oracle) and querying languages (e.g. SQL)
- Experienced with the following programming languages: Python, R, SPSS, or SAS
- Proficiency with extraction and manipulation of very large structured and unstructured datasets
- Proficiency with data visualization techniques
- Skills with one or more core analytical techniques and some proficiency with others: multi-variate linear regression, logistic regression, time series modeling, statistical design of experiments and hypothesis testing, clustering, dimension reduction techniques, classification, gradient-boosting, and natural language processing algorithms
- Proficiency using cloud-based machine learning resources such as those from AWS
- Translated analytical work into presentations (e.g. PowerPoint) suitable for non-technical audiences
- Experience establishing relationships and building credibility with partners and colleagues
- Experience prioritizing tasks and aligning partner expectations
