Position Details

Reporting to the Corporate Manager of Environmental, Health and Safety, the Environmental, Health and Safety Engineer provides interpretation and effect of federal, state and local regulations and proposed legislation relevant to the Occupational Health & Safety Administration (OSHA), Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Department of Transportation (DOT), National Fire Protection Codes and other House or Senate bills. You will be responsible for tasks including maintaining EHS management systems, answering Centralized Incident Report Center (CIRC) call line and responding to associated incident reports, industrial hygiene and environmental assessment programs, accident causation/risk analyses, regulatory coordination, training and instructional programs, and maintenance of federal, state and local mandated programs, i.e. Hazardous Waste Management, Community Right-to-Know SARA Title III reporting. This is Hybrid position requiring some presence at our Lake Forest Headquarters and will encompass up to 25% travel.

You Will

  • Help implement EH&S programs and strategies to reduce risk including:  OSHA, ergonomics, injury / illness reduction, hazard communication, environmental. emergency preparedness, and general employee safety.
  • Establish and communicate Company policy, methods and procedures concerning EPA, DOT and OSHA requirements to ensure compliance.
  • Conduct audits of operations to confirm compliance with respective to regulations (e.g., waste management practices) and company policies.
  • Help with the implementation, and management of EH&S goals.
  • Assist employees and leaders in assessing accidents and incidents as it relates to OSHA recordkeeping and recordability.
  • Be a primary contact for the Safety / CIRC / Accident Reporting Hotline.
  • Help develop and implement environmental, health and safety training programs to ensure regulatory compliance in all departments to protect the health and safety of Grainger employees.
  • Be a primary contact for administrating Grainger's EH&S Management System.
  • Help administer third-party contractor and supplier information management systems (i.e., ISNetworld, Avetta).

You Have

  • Bachelor's degree in a technical discipline or equivalent working experience.
  • 3+ years of EH&S experience in distribution, or manufacturing organization.
  • Must have technical skills related to safety matters.
  • The applicant must have experience managing safety related databases and software.
  • Working knowledge of EH&S Management Systems.
  • Professional certification preferred (ASP, CSP, CIH or equivalent).
