*This role typically is located in either our downtown Chicago office (primary/preferred location) or our Lake Forest headquarters, but due to COVID-19 will be fully virtual until further notice.  Once these office locations have a return to work plan, the team member will be required to be on-site.

We are looking for a User Experience Designer to help define and design experiences for Grainger’s enterprise systems and applications so that Grainger continues to be the destination for “the ones that get it done.” The ideal candidate is both pragmatic and creative, and can translate complex business needs into user-focused solutions.

 

 

Responsibilities

 

 

The User Experience Designer:

  • Works with Product Managers, Engineers and Visual Designers to define and design user experiences for Grainger’s internal and external customers  
  • Translates business requirements and user needs into tangible interaction designs through detailed user flows and wire frames
  • Contributes to the development of interaction patterns to promote consistency and reuse
  • Evaluates current experiences and makes recommendations for improvement
  • Develops detailed documentation for all standard work 
  • Plans and conducts user research, user testing and secondary research
  • Develops deep understanding of the business context
     

 

Requirements

 

 

  • Training in Human Centered Design, Design Methods, or related field
    Master of Design or Master of Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) preferred
  • 3+ years of UX experience working with an agile product team; corporate B2B experience preferred
  • Demonstrated understanding of design, usability, and research best practices and standards
  • Work samples that demonstrate design decisions and approach to designing solutions that solve complex problems
  • A desire to advocate, driven by strong empathy for the user, that is paired with the ability to communicate informed design rationale and value

  • Strong ability to partner across multiple disciplines and navigate a matrix organization
  • Understanding of how to use data and metrics to back up assumptions and contribute to project business cases
  • Ability to work efficiently and demonstrate a bias for action in a fast-paced, sometimes ambiguous environment
