Join a collaborative, high-impact engineering team at Granger driving the modernization of enterprise eProcurement and data exchange platforms that power operations across a large, complex organization. As a Software Engineer IV, you will be a hands-on technical leader who codes alongside your team, champions modern engineering practices, and shapes the architecture of systems that handle mission-critical business workflows. You will mentor engineers at every level, influence how the team builds and delivers software, and partner with Product and Architecture to ensure we are solving the right problems the right way. If you are passionate about test-driven development, continuous delivery, and building highly maintainable microservices-based systems, this is the role for you.
Chicago, IL is the preferred location with a hybrid work environment (2 days per week in the Merchandise Mart office). We will also consider highly qualified remote candidates who are willing to travel to Chicago for onboarding and occasional team meetings. Onsite onboarding will be required.
You Will

Serve as the lead engineer and technical anchor for a team modernizing legacy enterprise systems into microservices-based architectures using Java, Spring Boot, Kotlin, React, and TypeScript

-
Design and evolve distributed, fault-tolerant microservices with a focus on scalability, operability, and loose coupling
-
Drive automated deployment pipelines and CI/CD practices that enable the team to ship with confidence and speed
-
Actively mentor and upskill engineers through pair programming, code reviews, and hands-on knowledge sharing — building a team that grows in capability and confidence over time
-
Collaborate with Product Managers, Architects, and stakeholders to translate complex business requirements into pragmatic, well-designed technical solutions
-
Maintain and improve production software, with demonstrated ability to triage, resolve, and prevent issues through strong engineering fundamentals

-
5+ years of software engineering experience, with a strong focus on back-end development and full-stack delivery in production environments

-
Proven experience designing and delivering microservices and distributed systems with a strong understanding of integration patterns, fault tolerance, and scalability
-
Experience mentoring and upskilling engineers, with a genuine commitment to growing others and elevating team capability

Experience building and maintaining automated CI/CD pipelines with quality gates including code coverage and static analysis
-
Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to partner with stakeholders, push back constructively, and drive clarity on complex technical and business challenges
Preferred
-
Full-stack development experience with back-end proficiency in Java, Spring Boot, Kotlin, and front-end experience with React and TypeScript
