Position Details:
The Customer Data Governance team within Customer Information Design and Operations (CIDO) is formed to operationalize a data governance solution to promote standardized processes aligned to business terms, policies, and regulations. The team will improve the accessibility and quality of our data assets and tools and allow us to provide customer data solutions ensuring data is fit-for-use. Our goal is to ensure Grainger’s ability to grow is unconstrainted by any limitations of customer data.
The Senior Data Steward role ensures that business and IT follow and maintain alignment to Data Governance processes, data quality rules and standards for data assets within the CIM system. This role is a tangible function of the data governance framework ensuring the data is managed through its complete lifecycle, as an enterprise asset. We are looking for a candidate with data management background who understands data, how to govern and curate data and improve its consistency and quality.
You Will:
- Serve as the primary business contact responsible for the clear definition of data assets, ensuring the correct usage and context of data, enforcing policy/privacy standards
- Define important customer information object classification (taxonomy, attributes, attribute values) and their meaning, metadata, rules for use, format, and lineage.
- Act as the lead custodian of customer data assets; provide oversight of important customer information processes and how they produce high-quality customer outcomes
- Build and govern Customer Information guidelines, data standards and data dictionaries
- Develop business data glossary standards in partnership with cross domain teams
- Analyze logical data attributes and their relationships to a physical data element
- Evaluate metadata related inconsistencies across business areas and frame resolutions (data gaps, missing information, inconsistencies, mis-categorizations)
Customer Information Quality
- Review Customer Information architecture designs for alignment to guidelines, data standards, and high-level data governance strategy
- Create implementing specific data quality requirements, document adherence and improvements to data quality rules
- Define KPI’s that measures and highlight improvement to data quality
- Build Issue Management Resolution (IMR) and workflows to manage data quality issues
Technology – Data Catalog
- Collaborate with IT teams on the development of the enterprise data catalog tool
- Engage partners and develop business capability requirements
- Develop data catalog process workflows aligned to data taxonomy
You Have:
Education and Background
- 5+ years post-undergraduate experience
- Bachelor’s degree is required, in a STEM field.
- Will consider someone with a non-technical degree who has quantitative experience
- Experience with B2B Customer Information domain
Experience:
- 5+ years of experience working within the end-to-end Data Governance lifecycle
- 5+ years of experience in data related practices including data management, data governance, data quality, architecture, and data & analytics
- Experience with data governance and quality tools like Collibra, Informatica, Alation.
- Related hands-on project experience working with metadata, data quality, data cataloging, policies, and learning & development
- Ability to ask relevant questions to improve processes, identify issues/gaps, and build efficiencies
- Exposure to multiple business units to understand the linkages and dependencies
- Effectively communicate with business and technical teams
- Background in research, analysis, business communication, database management, and reporting
- Expert proficiency in Microsoft Office functionality, especially Excel (Macros, VBA, Pivot Tables, Lookups).
- Basic to Intermediate skills in Structured Query Language (SQL)
- Work in deadline-driven environment and handle multiple conflicting priorities
- Experience working with Agile methodologies across diverse teams
- Experience with machine learning, statistics, or software engineering
- B2B distribution, Industrial Supply, or MRO experience preferred, but not necessary
Impact:
Partnering with the Customer Information Design & Operations team, the CI Data Governance team owns the overall consistency and quality of the taxonomy, attribute schemas, customer classification, and value normalization. The Customer Information Data Governance team will drive continuous improvement within the Customer Information internal processes and external customer outcomes.
