This role requires a holistic business understanding, strategic and systemic thinking, analytical mindset, business partner & cross functional collaboration as well as strong problem-solving skills. The Sr. Manager – Global Category role has North American responsibility for building and managing strategic supplier relationships and cost across multiple indirect product categories which range from $100M - $250M in cost to the business. The role works closely with the Grainger US business to drive a North American and local strategy with aligned suppliers in support of US, Canada & Mexico. This role will negotiate with suppliers to derive savings and value across our business areas and departments, ensure the implementation and compliance to agreements and work to benefit all businesses in North America.  


You Will

  • Drive profitability by proactively weighing decisions, recommendations, and actions against their material impact to the bottom line
  • Negotiate win-win solutions by developing and implementong robust category plans by interfacing directly with internal business partner leadership of critical strategic suppliers to assure alignment of the business units objectives are met, including cost, quality, reliability, and innovation.  
  • Mange complex supplier relationships by developing Category Strategies which provides longer range plans to our business partners to support savings and value driven actions
  • Drive results through others by leading teams to ensure compliance with all US and appropriate foreign purchasing policies and regulations. 
  • Gather cross-functional feedback on the performance of our supplier partners, understand our spend analysis and build a strategy to support deriving savings and value

You Have

  • BS/BA degree in purchasing, supply chain or business

  • 7+ years business experience with a strong working knowledge of Supply Chain Management, Marketing, Cost Accounting, Finance and Economics.

  • Must have an understanding of Company’s business direction, business partner requirements and supply management-marketing strategy.

  •  Proven ability to drive and demonstrate results financially, strategically, and managerially.

  •  Possesses a clear understanding of suppliers, customers, Grainger’s strengths and weaknesses, opportunities and threats. Ability to apply visionary thought process in order to construct executable plans.

  • Clear and thorough knowledge of the negotiation process and key stages: Sets high standards and expectations. Ability to maintain strong relationships and be able to influence them.

  • Proven Change Management skills by inspiring teams to welcome change, embrace new directions, and future opportunities. Anticipates change and proactively prepares for it by defining objectives, responsibilities and time frames.

  • Travel both domestically and internationally is required at all times. Up to 20% of the time can be dedicated to travel.
