Primary Function:

You will utilize data science and advanced analytics applications to uncover insights and build tools to guide Grainger’s strategy across all digital channels. As a senior data scientist, you are responsible for leading data science and analytics projects through ideation/scoping, data gathering/cleansing, exploratory analysis, modeling/algorithm building, and reporting.

The senior data scientist works closely with a variety of business stakeholders, including product management, digital performance and optimization, user experience, merchandising and marketing. This position collaborates across functions to help Grainger uncover and implement insights that increase value for the business and our customers.

Compensation:
 

This position is salaried and will pay between $98,940-$152,49 with a 10% bonus. 

The range provided is a guideline and not a guarantee of compensation. Other factors that are involved in offer decisions include, and are not limited to: a candidate's experience, qualifications, geographical area, and internal equity of the team.

Principal Duties & Responsibilities::

This position is an individual contributor role and has no direct reports.

  • Inform digital strategy, website development and digital technology investments through data science and analytics applications.
  • Leverage large volume, high dimension data from multiple sources to build custom datasets. Perform exploratory statistical analysis to identify anomalies, relationships, and trends. Visualize patterns in large datasets and uncover opportunities.
  • Build statistical and machine learning models to uncover insights about the digital customer experience. Apply techniques such as clustering, classification, regression, natural language processing and time series modeling. Utilize methods including feature engineering, variable selection, and dimension reduction to improve models.
  • Partner with data engineering to deploy models and algorithms through cloud technology for stakeholder usage.
  • Work closely with a variety of business stakeholders to understand business problems, help scope analytic projects and deliver powerful insights.
  • Present findings to cross-functional stakeholders, telling powerful data stories to make insights and implications clear.

Required Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a quantitative field required (mathematics, statistics, engineering, data science, analytics, operations research, economics, etc.). Advanced degree preferred.
  • 3+ years’ data science experience in industry, with strong business acumen. An understanding of online customer behavior in the retail industry and/or B2B experience is preferred.
  • 3+ years’ experience with statistical modeling and machine learning in-industry (regression, classification, clustering, natural language processing, time-series modeling, etc.).
  • Proficiency in programming for data science and analytics applications (Python or R preferred). Proficiency in SQL with the ability to build complex queries.
  • Knowledge of database design and logic (e.g., Teradata, Snowflake, Databricks).  
  • Outstanding analytical skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Knowledge of web analytics tools such as Adobe Analytics or Google Analytics is a plus.
