We’re looking for an Engineering Manager who can drive execution, raise the bar for technical quality, and build a high-performing, engaged team.

You will be responsible for helping a small team succeed by improving execution, communication, and engineering quality. The team’s work supports other domain teams, so success in this role requires strong collaboration and consistent communication with engineering partners who depend on what HPDC builds.

The Engineering Manager is not expected to contribute production code as part of normal product work, but should be technically engaged and capable of participating in code review, guiding engineers toward sound implementation decisions, and helping the team improve its engineering habits.

You will report to Senior Manager, Product Engineering and the primary location will be Chicago with the ability to work from home 3 days per week or work remotely if you live outside of the Chicago area.

You will

  • Lead a small engineering team responsible for shared frontend surfaces and capabilities on Grainger.com
  • Help the team turn sometimes ambiguous goals into clear plans and steady execution
  • Improve communication with the domain teams that rely on HPDC’s work, either directly or by coaching engineers to communicate clearly and proactively
  • Build trust and alignment with partner engineering teams across the organization
  • Contribute to team-level strategy, prioritization, and execution
  • Actively participate in code review and help raise the team’s bar for code quality and consistency
  • Coach engineers in technical judgment, ownership, and day-to-day execution
  • Identify opportunities to improve how the team works, especially as the team grows and its scope evolves
  • Hire and onboard engineers over time as the team expands

You have

  • Experience leading software engineers in a professional setting
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to build working relationships across teams
  • Experience helping teams deliver meaningful work in the face of ambiguity
  • Enough technical depth to engage in code review and guide implementation decisions when needed
  • Experience with React and frontend-heavy systems
  • Familiarity with backend services in JavaScript or TypeScript environments
  • An interest in improving engineering quality, consistency, and team practices
  • The ability to learn new systems and get effective quickly
