Position Details:

As an Engineering Manager it's your job to create an environment where diverse, mission driven teams,  find joy in the creative exercise of shipping business value daily and go home each day knowing they can focus on time away from work because their systems are resilient and performant.

You oversee the health of engineering teams and their members. It's your job to make sure your team and the individuals on your team have the skills and resources to do their jobs. When necessary, you are also the person responsible for performance management of team members.

You will support one of our KeepStock engineering teams. KeepStock is Grainger's Inventory Management Solution for helping its customers refine their inventory management processes and improve productivity. We help our customers manage their inventory using IoT devices (~22,000 vending machines), cloud-based web tools, and analytics. We're part way to replacing a legacy monolith with cloud-native microservices and we have the right modern tools to make this fun .

You will manage one or multiple teams of software engineers up to a maximum capacity of approximately (20) people.

You will report to the Director, Product Engineering and will be based in downtown Chicago.

 

You Will:

  • Promote excellence in engineering practices on your team through coaching, mentoring, and partnering with practice leads
  • You won't write code daily, but you are familiar with modern engineering practices, cloud-based architectures and tools, so that you can help your team throughout the SDLC
  • Ensure that all members of a development team (Tech Lead, Software Engineer, QA) have the skills and tools they need
  • Use metrics to monitor the health and productivity of the teams to promote capacity planning and continuous improvement
  • Highlight risks and assist teams in the removal of impediments, participate in headcount planning and other operational meetings with other levels of management
  • Monitor the daily health of the team to stay informed about how their assistance/coaching the team in the delivery of their commitments/forecasts can improve outcomes.
  • Create/Promote a culture of team autonomy, continuous improvement, and sustainable pace within the teams that they manage.
  • Manage staff through processes including feedback, career development, performance reviews, performance improvement

 

You Have:

  • At least 5 years of people management or team leadership in a technical capacity
  • Ability to understand how to identify opportunities for upskilling people they manage and how to improve others
  • Deep passion for servant leadership and the knowledge of how to apply these principles from the perspective of people management.
  • Passion for Agile principles and processes and an understanding of how to monitor team health.
  • Experience with the performance review process including goals agreement, career development, P&D and feedback.
  • Bachelor's degree in Business (or Management), Computer Science, Engineering, or related discipline, or equivalent work experience
