Position Details:

We are looking for a Lead Full Stack Engineer to be part of a team building a new product. You will focus on providing Grainger customers with recommendations that help them to improve their spend. This compelling role is part of a team of data engineers, data scientists, full stack engineers, and quality engineers. You have experience building on the public cloud, success in building products from scratch, and a strong foundation in software engineering. Familiarity with reporting concepts.

You can be based in either downtown Chicago or Lake Forest, Illinois and will report to the Senior Director, Information Management.

You Will:

  • You will work on optimizing the order checkout process on to be cloud-native, highly scalable, resilient and available. Advanced knowledge of cloud native event-driven microservices based architectures including operational concerns such as performance, resiliency, observability, monitoring, discovery and routing.
  • Have experience with, and understand how to transform monoliths to microservices and micro front-ends (facades, strangler approaches, et. al.) and have the foresight to anticipate challenges with a microservices based stack.
  • You understand and can implement the 12-Factor App methodology. Strong knowledge of building restful APIs and the challenges with backwards compatibility in a deploy-often environment Thorough understanding and strong advocacy for engineering best practices such as TDD, trunk based development, CI-CD, frequent incremental iterative deployments, pair programming, peer reviews et al.
  • You treat deployments/releases as non-events because you are a disciple of the theory of continuous delivery with a past history of its application in practice. Understanding of the Test Pyramid and strong advocacy for test driven development Expert-level knowledge of Java (Lambda functions, functional programming) and Spring boot.

You Have:

  • 8+ years of industry experience as a Software Engineer.
  • Expert-level knowledge of Java (Lambda functions, functional programming) and Spring boot.. Experience with Node.js and Typescript is a plus. Our microservices tend to be written in Java or Node.js
  • Experience writing unit, integration and end to end tests with frameworks such as easyMock, Mockito, Nightwatch.js, Jest, RestAssured and Selenium. Expert-level knowledge of source code management with Git. Hands-on experience with one Continuous Integration tool (GitLab CI, Jenkins, GitHub Actions, Circle CI, Bamboo, etc.)
  • Hands-on experience with containerization tools like Docker and Kubernetes. Experience with SQL and NoSQL databases. Past hands-on experience with Kafka. Working knowledge of a cloud technology such as AWS, Azure, Google Cloud or Cloud Foundry You appreciate engineering excellence and software craftsmanship Collaborate effectively with product managers, designers, engineers and stakeholders.
  • Comfortable with Agile methods such as Extreme Programming (XP), Scrum and/or Kanban Subscribe to the idea that DevOps is a culture and a mindset rather than a position, role or tool


  • Vendor certification and training
  • Engineering degree, or a related technical discipline, or equivalent work experience
