Position Details:

Search is the front door to Grainger’s digital catalog. As Senior Engineering Manager, Search Experience, you will lead a program of three squads that shape our customer experience across search and browse:

  • Content: React/TypeScript templates for Search Results, Category, and Product Detail Pages.
  • Workstation: Internal tooling that curates and organizes category presentation.
  • Logic: Presentation logic in SAP Commerce (Hybris) for facets, filters, and navigation.

You will be accountable for execution quality, flow efficiency, and reliability across these squads—partnering closely with Product, UX, Data Science, and other Search teams. You will help evolve our technical architecture, foster a culture of engineering excellence, and ensure alignment with broader digital commerce priorities.

You will:

  • Lead a multi-squad program (TLs, engineers, QA, and strategic partners) with clear charters, interfaces, and goals.
  • Drive hypothesis-led UX improvements and experimentation across Search Results, Category, and Product Detail Page surfaces.
  • Partner deeply with Product/UX to prioritize outcomes and measure impact (e.g., click-through, time-to-content, error rates).
  • Raise the quality bar via robust testing strategy (unit, contract, E2E), pre-deploy checklists, safe rollout/rollback, and observability. Proactively drives improvements to culture, ways of working, and execution.
  • Modernize pragmatically, by stabilizing Hybris presentation logic and migrating capabilities into modern components.
  • Develop talent and strengthen the bench: mentor TLs and Sr ICs, hire/onboard top engineers.
  • Communicate clearly and data-informed—providing concise status, risks, and decisions across technical and business stakeholders.
  • Promote sound engineering practices: CI/CD, code review discipline, secure coding, accessibility, performance, and reliability.

You have:

  • Bachelor’s degree in information technology, Computer Science, or related field
  • 10+ years’ experience in Software Engineering
  • A strong track record as an Engineering Manager or technical team leader guiding multiple squads or a program.
  • Hands-on software background building product experiences, including modern web (React/TypeScript or equivalent).
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder skills across engineering, product, design, and analytics.
  • Deep understanding of SDLC best practices, CI/CD, testing strategies, and system design fundamentals.
  • Ability to navigate ambiguity, set clear priorities, and deliver consistently in a large-scale enterprise environment.
  • Growth mindset with a coaching orientation; you build inclusive, high-trust teams.
  • Experience recruiting, onboarding, and retaining engineering talent in blended teams (FTEs and partners).

Nice to have:

  • E-commerce search/browse experience (faceting, relevance, SEO, accessibility, Core Web Vitals).
  • Experience with admin/merchandising tools and experimentation frameworks.
  • Familiarity with SAP Commerce (Hybris) and progressive modernization of legacy presentation layers.
