*This role typically is located in our downtown Chicago office, but due to COVID-19 will be fully virtual until further notice.  Once this office location has a return to work plan, the team member will be required to be on-site.


You will:


  • Define and lead testing practice in functional area
  • Gain and maintain subject matter expertise by participating in grooming/planning sessions for teams in functional area
  • Partner with Business Analysts, Developer, and Product Managers to design and communicate test plans, identifying impacts and synergies across domains and facilitate collaboration
  • Perform testing activities when needed including automated test development and exploratory manual testing
  • Comfortable navigating database technologies
  • Track and act on key quality metrics aligned with achieving goals
  • Mentor junior-level Quality Engineers in investigation and test strategy
  • Act as test architect by leading development and maintenance of test strategy inside functional area, ensuring compliance with enterprise strategy
  • Champion Grainger quality strategies like system testability and shifting testing left
  • Review test code developed by test engineers
  • Identify risks or friction in current quality infrastructure (Pipeline, testing gaps, environments, practices, etc.)
  • Leverage root cause analysis to continuously identify risk or opportunities to improve practice
  • Help build Grainger’s engineering community of practice by creating opportunities for learning, building capabilities, sharing knowledge and reducing duplication of work. 
  • Act as escalation point for quality issues on team.


You Have:


  • 5 or more years of practical experience testing APIs, web apps or other enterprise software
  • Experience leveraging best practices like TDD, BDD, CI/CD and the Practical Test Pyramid
  • Proficiency with any modern programming language
  • Significant prior experience operating in a modern engineering environment
  • Specific ecommerce experience in domains such as: Cart/Checkout, Search/Browse, Account/User management, etc.
  • Proven experience with hands on automated test development
  • Experience with Agile Development
  • Strong analytical, diagnosis, and troubleshooting skills
