The Manager, Lead Data Scientist will lead a team of Data Scientists that solve complex, data intensive problems by

  1. Creating perspectives on customers and product dynamics that inform strategic pricing decisions
  2. Developing and deploying statistical and machine learning models that improve the effectiveness of our pricing operations
  3. Measuring and identifying the drivers of pricing performance

Core responsibilities:

  • Manage the development of explanatory, predictive, and prescriptive models appropriate for solving different pricing problems
  • Develop the hypotheses to inform exploratory data analysis and apply deep business knowledge to customer and product data to uncover new pricing insights
  • Manage the design, execution, and measurement of experiments including delivery of results and recommendations
  • Own relationships between Pricing Strategy and the data science team; partner with the strategy team to identify, execute, and implement analytical solutions and provide input into pricing strategies
  • Create and present the materials necessary to effectively communicate the results of analytical work and associated recommendations and influence the adoption of analytical recommendations
  • Leverage expertise on Grainger’s business operations, go-to-market model, and the broader Maintenance, Repair, and Operations (MRO) market to identify white-space analytical opportunities
  • Coach and mentor team members on project work; proactively assist junior team members in developing new skills and knowledge

 

Required Education/Experience:

  • 7+ years of experience in analytics and data science roles
  • BS, MS, or PhD in a technical field such as Statistics, Mathematics, Data Science, Applied Analytics, Operations Research, Applied Science or Engineering
  • Strong business acumen
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Proficient with usage of databases (e.g. Teradata, Snowflake, Oracle) and querying languages (e.g. SQL)
  • Highly skilled with one or more of the following programming languages: Python, R, SPSS, or SAS
  • Proficiency with extraction and manipulation of very large structured and unstructured datasets
  • Proficiency with data visualization techniques
  • Proficiency with one or more core analytical techniques and knowledge of others: multi-variate linear regression, logistic regression, time series modeling, statistical design of experiments and hypothesis testing, clustering, dimension reduction techniques, classification, gradient-boosting, and natural language processing algorithms
  • Proficiency leveraging cloud-based machine learning resources such as those from AWS
  • Demonstrated ability to translate analytical work into presentations (e.g. PowerPoint) suitable for non-technical audiences
  • Experience establishing strong relationships and building credibility with business partners and colleagues
  • Experience prioritizing tasks and aligning business partner expectations
  • Experience coaching and mentoring others

Preferred Education/Experience:

  • MS or higher preferred
  • Experience in pricing applications of analytical work
  • 1+ years of people leadership experience
