Compensation:

This position is hourly, and the starting pay rate is $33/hour

Position Details: 
 
This internship is a 10-week program based in our downtown Chicago office. You will work on the User Experience Design team, which is responsible for designing Grainger’s enterprise applications and customer-facing experiences. This intern will work cross-functionally with business stakeholders, product managers, and engineers on design projects that are impactful to our users. In addition to exciting projects, there will be time throughout the summer for networking, professional development, and social events. 

 

The internship is paid, and free housing is provided in downtown Chicago. 

 

You Will: 

As a User Experience Design Intern, you will work closely with a Senior UX Designer on executing designs and learn about both customer-facing experiences and employee-facing tools that the UX team supports. You will grow both your technical and soft skills and be exposed to how a UX team operates and partners with cross-functional teams to deliver valuable experiences. 

 

Learning Opportunities: 

  • Learn how UX Designers partner with stakeholders, product management, and engineering to deliver experiences for Grainger customers and internal employees 

  • Develop an understanding of how UX and UI Designers work together to leverage and improve upon an established design system 

  • Gain experience conducting user research sessions 

  • Understand how the tools we design bring value to users and drive growth at Grainger 

  • Gain experience working in an agile environment 

 

Responsibilities: 

  • Participate in discussions with users and stakeholders to gather requirements and understand user needs 

  • Work alongside a Senior UX Designer on design deliverables 

  • Participate in user feedback sessions to gain an understanding of how our tools are being used and identify improvement opportunities 

  • Provide ideas on how to improve upon our existing experiences and design systems 

  • Network and build relationships with the broader UX team, product managers, engineering partners, and business stakeholders 

 

You Have: 

  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Human-Centered Design, Design Methods, Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), Visual Design, or related fields 

  • Targeted graduation date between Winter 2026 – Fall 2027 

  • An understanding of design, usability, and research best practices 

  • An interest in designing tools for internal Grainger employees 

  • Proficiency in common wireframing tools, preferably Figma 

  • Strong written, verbal, and presentation skills 

  • Initiative to proactively plan and execute work  

  • The ability to make thoughtful decisions and explain your rationale to others 

  • The ability work in the US without visa sponsorship
