Director, eCommerce Engineering

The Director, eCommerce Engineering, is responsible for directing the eCommerce Engineering Managers and cross-functional teams to ensure timely and effective delivery of web and mobile functional releases. Additionally, the Director, eCommerce Engineering is responsible for ensuring the development teams are adhering to efficient, effective, secure and scalable development standards within our existing digital capabilities. This person will oversee the design, development, testing, support, and set technical direction for the development teams.

 

Principal Duties & Responsibilities

  • Leads a team of 60+ individuals comprised of Engineering Managers, Developers, QA, and BSAs. The Director, eCommerce Engineering is responsible for setting technical direction for the eCommerce platforms while ensuring the business backlog is being developed in the most expeditious, effective, and efficient manner.
  • Directly manages direct reports of 6-10 Managers or Principal Engineers on a day to day basis to ensure the team is leading the change needed to support ~$5B in annual revenue.
  • Establishes a work atmosphere where team members’ behavior exemplifies and promotes the Grainger Values.
  • Responsible for hiring, coaching, mentoring, and retaining the top talent needed to grow the eCommerce platform and support 50% of Grainger revenue
  • Responsible for managing the group’s budget. This is includes the planning and managing of department/project capital and expense activities to ensure that financial targets are met.
  • Handles escalations from business partners across all customer service areas to ensure all issues are handled and addressed in a timely manner
  • Ensures the proper reporting, tracking, escalations, and metrics are in place to validate the site performance for all functional areas.
  • Lead the technical integration with 3rd party vendors to ensure a scalable solution that addresses the business requirements to drive incremental revenue
  • Partners with the Director of Security and Infrastructure to ensure the functional areas of responsibility are adhering to the latest security and technical guidelines and addressing any known vulnerabilities.
  • Provides direction to the Managers to help resolve complex problems and barrier removal that aid in the result of timely delivery of project solutions to support the eCommerce business
  • Oversees an Application support team with the required skill set to respond effectively defects identified and prioritized by the eCommerce business
  • Manages Employee Talent and Performance requirements by providing individuals with accurate, timely and coaching feedback.
  • Establishes relationships with technology vendors to ensure the appropriate solutions for functional areas such as search, Database, and Browse are taking advantage of the most relevant technology solutions available to meet the eCommerce and Mobile needs.
  • Identifies changes in the technology landscape that can be exploited to create a competitive advantage for Grainger, which can improve upon business operations, or reduce total cost of ownership. Where appropriate, provide recommendation to Enterprise Systems and business leadership to achieve objective.
  • Monitors competitor sites and features to ensure Grainger.com is ahead in delivering features customers want and need
  • Participates in Enterprise Systems strategy and long range planning activities.

 

Preferred Education & Experience

 

  • Minimum 10 – 15 year’s experience in Engineering leadership experience.
  • Minimum five years experience managing eCommerce managers, analysts and developers.
  • Experience effectively managing large groups of staff.
  • Demonstrated leadership and collaboration skills, and ability to drive/influence change without direct authority.
  • Extremely strong problem-solving and negotiation skills.
  • Demonstrated business knowledge and organizational awareness.
  • Proven expertise managing vendor/supplier relationships, including contract negotiation, ongoing maintenance/support and problem-resolution.
  • Strong verbal and written communication, facilitation, and interpersonal skills.
  • A Bachelor’s degree in Business (or Management), Computer Science, Engineering, or related discipline, or equivalent work experience is required.
  • Strong project management skills; experience in organizing, planning, and executing large-scale projects from vision through implementation to include directing internal personnel, contractors, and vendors. Must be able to demonstrate ability to analyze project needs and determine resources to meet objectives.
  • Strong technical skills, with a deep understanding of eCommerce and core engineering practices to include test automation, CI/CD, Cloud, MicroServices, Infrastructure as Code and APIs.
