At Grainger, our team members have an opportunity to work in one of the largest SAP-centric and complex, 24x7, E-commerce environments and gain knowledge and experience with many SAP and other application modules running in On-Prem and cloud.  Our Database Engineering team is currently seeking a Database Engineer to primarily support databases running in Oracle/Exadata and SQL Server database platform with opportunities to expand skill set in AWS Cloud, PostgreSQL, and Teradata appliances. The Engineer also provides production and project support for designated databases deployed throughout the company. The Engineer must also provide database consulting/guidance services to other Grainger business areas.


Database Engineer responsibilities include:


  • Work collaboratively with Architects and Analysts to develop the database design and build solutions that meet the defined functional, quality, performance, security, and architectural standards.
  • Work with Technical Support Specialists to advise on and address escalated level 2 and 3 support issues
  • Perform database upgrade, install and patching in the cloud and on-premise
  • Administers Oracle and Microsoft SQL Server databases, E-Commerce, and other applications in running in On-Prem and Cloud
  • Monitors database performance and implements changes necessary to maintain acceptable performance levels. Ensures the availability and recoverability of all databases.
  • Develops and document processes and procedures for maintenance, installation, upgrade, backups and recoveries of production and test databases as required by the business
  • Provides 24x7 production database support on a rotational basis
  • Troubleshoots and tracing database related transactions in a multi-tier application across internal and ISP networks, firewalls, and different platforms (Unix/Linux/Windows) in the Cloud and On-premise
  • Participates in quality assurance reviews when necessary with an emphasis on accessing data with efficiency.
  • Provision Compute, storage, and network support for DB appliances.



Position Requirements:


  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or related field or equivalent related experience.
  • 4-8 years of mixed Database Administration experience in Oracle and Microsoft SQL Server Database Platforms
  • Detailed knowledge and working experience of RAC, Grid Infrastructure, ASM, RMAN, EXPDP/IMPDP
  • Working experience in either Oracle 10g/11g/12c/18c/19c
  • Ability to configure, troubleshoot and maintain oracle RAC and Data guard
  • Ability to configure, troubleshoot and maintain different SQL Server versions.
  • Deep expertise in the following areas:
    • RDBMS architecture, DB Design & implementation of HA/DR Solutions, Performance Tuning, Supporting DB Appliances, and Implementing Industries best practices in Oracle/SQL Server environments.
  • Strong grasp of automation tools and DevOps concepts
  • Have expertise or knowledge in building automation solutions using any scripting language such as Unix Shell Scripting, PowerShell, Python or Perl
  • Experience with automating day to day DBA tasks with SQL scripts in the Cloud and on-premise
  • Experience with provisioning/monitoring/maintaining of AWS Servers and open source databases is a plus.
  • Experience with implementing projects using SCRUM/Agile methodologies
  • Lead projects with clear timelines and deliverables
  • Good communication (verbal & written) and inter-personal skills
  • Deep desire to expand skill set and excel in meeting business requirements
  • Strong problem analysis and resolution (debugging) skills.
  • Time management skills to balance priorities and deliver assignments on time and within budget
  • Ability to effectively communicate technical issues to software suppliers and to the business representatives.
  • An understanding of production environments including the requirement for high availability and team oriented 24x7 support capabilities.
  • Must have the ability to multi-task in a very fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to handle high pressure situations and quickly respond and resolve production problems.
