Position Details:

As a Software Engineering Manager at Grainger, you will lead a team of engineers, and partner with product management, platform engineering and architecture to deliver products end-to-end. We are looking for leaders who will be champions of Agile software development, continuous delivery, the DevOps culture("You build it, you test it, you run it") and the encompassing engineering best practices.

You will also be responsible to evaluate team and individual performance, provide coaching and mentorship to engineers to help them grow in their career, evaluate and improve existing process or introduce new ones and create an awesome team culture.

You will report to the Senior Manager, Product Engineering and will be based in either Lake Forest, IL or downtown Chicago.

 

You Will:

  • Set and communicate team priorities that support the broader organization's goals. Align strategy, processes, and decision-making across teams.
  • Partner with Product Management to help develop and drive the roadmap within the scope of your team. Evolve the roadmap to meet anticipated future requirements and infrastructure needs.
  • Set clear expectations with individuals based on their level and role and aligned to the broader organization's goals. Meet with individuals to discuss performance and development and provide feedback and coaching.
  • Be an advocate for Agile software development and Extreme Programming practices such as small batch size, test-driven development, trunk-based development, pair programming, code reviews, continuous delivery, daily deployments
  • Believe in breaking down Silos and complete team autonomy. There are no QA teams, Release teams, DevOps teams etc. "You build it, you test it, you run it"

 

You Have:

  • Minimum 2 years experience managing a team of engineers in a fast-paced environment
  • Minimum 8 years experience in software engineering
  • Hands-on experience as a UI engineer using Node.js, Javascript specifically React.js,
  • Experience with operational concerns of a micro front-end & microservices based architecture in a daily deployment model such as performance, resiliency, observability, deployment, monitoring, discovery and routing
  • Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or related field or equivalent work experience
