Senior Manager, GGS Product Engineering & Quality

MAJOR PURPOSE

 

Provide leadership and strategic thought process to engineering team members in the development, evaluation and implementation of new product introductions, product line expansions, line reviews (of current product offerings),and product maintenance for appointed product categories.

 

Work cross-functionally with internal and external customers, represent the engineering perspective and participate in product quality, process and category strategy decision.

 

Ensure that all engineering support performed meets all GGS quality, performance, safety, reliability and process standards.

 

Responsible for growth and development of engineering team and laboratory testing capability.

 

Responsible to provide cost & quality transparency to Supplier Managers.

 

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

     

  • Manage, mentor and develop product engineers, testing engineers and technicians in a team-building environment and provide technical direction as an active contributing member in a cross-functional product team.
  • Build effective cross functional relationships to ensure satisfactory engineering support, and ease of doing business with key stakeholders.
  • Drive the team to understand the business implications of engineering recommendations - sales performance, supplier performance, and product cost management.
  • Identify engineering metrics that impact customer experience and business goals, enhance team productivity and create visual management to make progress visible.
  • Responsible for employee performance goal setting, and team member growth and development through the Grainger performance management system.
  • Recruit, hire and train the team members, establish a long term plan to coach and develop product expertise for core categories.
  • Develop product evaluation strategies that provide timely, accurate and detailed technical evaluations of new and existing products regarding performance, quality, reliability and safety that can be presented to the team on-time in an understandable and useful manner.
  • Guide and direct the team to resolve product issues by performing root cause analyses, procuring appropriate resources, providing thorough product testing, and implementing corrective actions.
  • Ensure that all Grainger and ISO procedures are maintained and followed.
  • Ensure technical content provided by engineering team in support documentations provides a satisfactory customer experience, and is a valuable resource.
  • Lead and sponsor continuous improvement activities.
  • Develop and enhance in-house testing capabilities for core categories, and set up proper test equipment under budget 

REQUIREMENTS

  • A Bachelor’s degree in a technical discipline is required. A Bachelor’s or Masters degree in electrical, mechanical or manufacturing engineering is preferred. MBA a plus.
  • Minimum of 10 years relevant work experience, at least 5 years in people managerial role is a must.
  • Working experience in multinational company is a must
  • Knowledge in the manufacturing, design and application of industrial products is a plus
  • Proficient in the use of various hand tools, power tools, computers, electronic meters and conventional lab test equipment is a plus.
  • Proven engineering skills are required in product analysis and technical problem solving, multi-tasking, and prioritizing a dynamic workload.
  • Demonstrate comfort with emerging realities and changing conditions and adjusts accordingly.
  • Require strong communication skills, willingness to work in a dynamic team environment, a healthy attitude and a keen sense of urgency in completing tasks on time.
  • Set a high personal integrity in conducting business with suppliers worldwide.  Ensure compliance to the laws, business guidelines and ethical standards set by Grainger as well as local and the U.S. governments
  • Proficient in using Microsoft Office: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc.
  • Able to travel 10-15% of time, domestic and international  
  • Flexible work days and hours required in dealing with international offices.
