The Senior Manager of Project Management is responsible for defining, planning, tracking, and managing projects and programs on behalf of the Project Management Office (PMO) and Project Management Team. The PMO is responsible for the delivery of enterprise-wide, cross-functional, and multi-project initiatives also known as programs from inception through close. This role supports the project team in creation of project/ program strategies and governance, delivery models including multi-project plans, work breakdown structures, and resource management. This role requires the ability to lead and motivate people, encourage teamwork, ability to communicate effectively with senior leadership, and possesses a clear vision of what determines a successful solution for the work effort and for the company. Must have sufficient technical background to be able to anticipate, identify, and make accurate technology decisions. He/She must be able to manage change and take active leadership in timely decision making. This is a significant role for Grainger with the opportunity to execute on a large portfolio of projects and programs for our internal partners and customers. This position reports to the Director of Enterprise Project Management.

This role can be located in our Lake Forest office, or Downtown in our Merchandise Mart location. 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Functions with the highest degree of autonomy
  • Leads and manages the Project Planners, Project Managers, and Sr. Project Managers (PM’s) ensuring they understand their roles and accept their responsibilities
  • Provide ongoing developmental feedback to PM’s as appropriate and necessary
  • Responsible for defining and establishing project management processes, standards, deliverables and the operational standards to ensure consistent project execution
  • Manage and balance the project team’s workload and assignments
  • Ensure development of the project team including appropriate certifications and training as part of a comprehensive development plan
  • Serve as first point of escalation for project team and provide direction on resolution of issues
  • Manage interdependencies and coordination across projects to ensure information relating to project deliverables, risks, and issues are effectively communicated between stakeholders
  • Regularly track progress on all project plans and work with PM’s to analyze actual performance against project plan and make adjustments as needed according to plan objectives
  • Develop status reporting methodologies and be prepared to provide updates to executives as requested
  • Guide PM’s to identify, analyze, and manage project/program risks and potential impacts
  • Responsible for the development and maintenance of program and project management delivery tool sets.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCES AND COMPETENCIES:  

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Management or related field.
  • 3-5 years Leadership experience in managing a team of Project Managers
  • 8 years Project Management experience preferably in IT Infrastructure & Operations
  • Experience with Agile methodology.
  • Experience in a customer-facing consulting capacity
  • Hands on experience in setting up a PMO organization
  • Experience in Service Portfolio Management
  • PMP certified
  • Best in class communication, organizational and influencing skills.
