Primary Function
Develop and assist with the execution of investor relations communications including quarterly earnings releases/calls, analyst day, conferences and road shows.  Primary responsibilities include the research, analysis, and consultation for developing and targeting current and potential investors and analysis of Grainger’s competitive positioning today and in the future based on the Company’s investment thesis and long-term targets. Also responsible for the development and coordination of Grainger’s Annual Report and Fact Book.  This role functions as an official company spokesperson with the investment community.


Principal Duties & Responsibilities

  • Prepare quarterly earnings releases, presentations and scripts for CEO and CFO.  Direct interactions with CEO and CFO in articulating investor questions and concerns.
  • Serve as the primary architect, writer and developer of Annual Report and Fact Book. This requires coordination across many of Grainger’s internal functions as well as management of external printing vendor and creative agency.
  • Develop and maintain the Investor Relations targeting database to ensure that the IR team and Senior Management are spending time with the best current and potential investors.  Analyze investment targeting effectiveness and execute follow up correspondence with Investors after meetings occur.
  • Represent the Company to the investment community and the general public by responding to inquiries regarding financial performance and General Company information.
  • Manage all outside calls requesting public statements from the Company.  Determine the importance and the urgency of the requests and coordinate the involvement of the appropriate Company personnel.
  • Develop and Monitor key financial metrics that provide Senior Management and the Board a summarized view of investor behavior. Gather intelligence and monitor industry trends especially in the financial markets or with primary competitors to best prepare IR team to respond to inquiries. 
  • Review and distribute all written financial analyst reports highlighting changes in investment opinion, rating, and earnings per share estimates.
  • Work with the financial analyst to monitor financial projections from the investment community and report this information to Senior Management bi-weekly.
  • Prepare the quarterly Investor Relations report for the Board of Directors.
  • Initiate meetings with business unit managers to keep current and remain knowledgeable about Company strategy and operations.  Create Investor Relations tools to communicate this information to the investment community.
  • Responsible for maintaining the Investor Relations website. Manage relationships with external providers as necessary.



Preferred Education & Experience

  • Undergraduate degree required.  Preferably in Finance, Accounting
  • MBA preferred 
  • 5+ years professional experience
  • Knowledge of investor relations within a business-to-business industry
  • Strategic mindset and strong business/financial acumen required to support investor relations activities and global business leaders
  • Experience working within a public company and promoting the organization globally
  • Strong organization and time management skills that enable the employee to prioritize and manage a high volume of detailed work with conflicting priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent communication skills to facilitate routine and accelerated work requests and manage internal corporate expectations.
  • Immense personal initiative is required to anticipate requests before they are received.
  • A positive and professional team player attitude that works well under pressure and is flexible and responsible. Attention to detail and a good head for numbers


Work Environment

  • This role reports to the Director, Investor Relations.



  • Directly interfaces with Grainger’s CEO, CFO and other senior leaders in the organization to develop strategic and financial messaging for the external investment community.
  • Information released by the Investor Relations Dept is used to evaluate the Company’s financial and operational performance in the financial community.
  • This position could expose the Company to the risk of significant liability if material financial information is disclosed selectively or not consistently with prior communications
