Primary Function

This position is responsible for owning the end-to-end process for inventory and freight, which includes accuracy and reporting of Grainger’s inventory and freight position as well as supporting ad-hoc analysis to support business decisions.  This position is also responsible for monitoring and analysis of physical inventory accuracy.

This position plays a meaningful role in supporting Grainger’s strategy by working cross-functionally to support initiatives that add business value and drive bottom line growth. They deliver high quality business insights that tell the story behind the financials and business operations.

Principal Duties & Responsibilities

  • Ensure that all assigned accounting entries have been made in a timely and accurate manner and are in accordance with accounting guidance (timing of accruals, capitalization vs. expense, etc.).
  • Using a controllership mindset in creating clear and transparent financial analysis on the health of the business; understanding end-to-end process, standard work and controls.
  • Own the end-to-end process for the annual physical inventory by leading cross functional teams responsible for planning, executing auditing, and reporting results of the annual physical inventory.
  • Support Manager and business partners (including product Finance and others) with ad-hoc analysis and reporting to ensure sound business decisions.
  • Drive continuous improvement by automating, refining, and implementing processes, tools, and deliverables both within Accounting and supporting finance and business functions.
  • Assess risks and opportunities and identify key operational and financial issues to be addressed.  Provide recommendations and influence business decisions, which include presentations to senior management.

 

 

Preferred Education & Experience

  • BA/BS in Accounting/Finance, CPA designation a plus
  • 3-5 years of corporate or public accounting, or finance experience preferred
  • Proven financial analysis skills and ability to recognize and investigate unusual trends is a must
  • Understanding and application of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (US GAAP) and related financial statements reporting and disclosures, and internal controls are a plus
  • Self-starter, able to work independently to solve problems and achieve results and execute projects cross-functionally while managing multiple priorities
  • Ability to multi-task and work within deadline orientated environment
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including ability to provide feedback to business partners
  • Ability to work in a team environment, willingness to learn and accept new responsibilities as business needs change or initiatives arise
  • Strong inter-personal skills are critical as this position requires extensive interaction with individuals at various levels across the organization, including senior management, external and internal auditors, and outside consultants
  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office, particularly Excel required
  • SAP, BPC and BlackLine experience a plus

 

 

Work Environment

  • During month-end close, the team member may need to work the required hours to complete assignments within required corporate deadlines
  • Adherence to deadlines, especially during the monthly and quarterly close process is critical
  • Ability to manage conflicting priorities
  • Job does not require travel in general; however, limited travel may occur to meet business needs.
