Primary Function
This position is responsible for all aspects of general accounting, analysis and analysis for the Enterprise Systems (ES) organization.  This position will analyze numerous asset, liability and expense accounts to ensure the financial statements are properly reported at period end.



Principal Duties & Responsibilties

Month end Responsibilities:

  • Manage the monthly close process to ensure the accounting, reporting and analysis are completed in a timely and accurate manner
  • Prepare monthly allocation journal entries from ES to various Grainger businesses
  • Prepare month end software capitalization journal entries, accrual entries and other month end entries as needed
  • Review and analyze the balance sheet and income statement accounts and provide decision support to ES management and various functional areas 
  • Ensure Company financial policies, procedures and internal controls are followed


Additional Responsibilities:

  • Provide analysis on ad hoc projects, as necessary
  • Understand end to end ES accounting process
  • Identify risks around ES processes and ensure controls are in place to mitigate critical risks
  • Partner with ES business on strategic initiatives and help them solve operational issues
  • Prepare consolidated financial statements for the ES organization
  • Prepare and coordinate capital asset requests
  • Ability to interact with and address internal/external auditor questions
  • Drive continuous improvement to ensure efficient processes and adequate internal controls are in place


Preferred Education & Experience

  • This position requires a B.S. or B.A. in accounting with approximately 3-5 years of related experience, CPA and/or MBA preferred, but not required
  • Big 4 public accounting or large corporate accounting or finance experience preferred
  • This person should possess good analytical skills and have the ability to recognize and explain unusual trends/results
  • Strong financial statements acumen, including understanding of interconnectivity between P&L, Balance Sheet, and Cash Flows
  • Good verbal and written communication skills
  • Self-starter, able to work independently, solve problems and achieve results working with cross-functional teams
  • Ability to handle pressure and stress appropriately while managing conflicting priorities
  • Strong inter-personal skills are critical as this position requires extensive interaction with individuals at various levels across the organization
  • Good PC skills with an emphasis on spreadsheets are necessary  Advanced Excel skills are preferred including pivot table and vlookup functionality understanding
  • Attention to details, control/audit mindset and high degree of accuracy
  • Ability to work under tight time constraints with zero tolerance for missed deadlines
  • Must be able to shift focus easily and draw conclusions timely as business needs arise
  • SAP software experience preferred


Work Environment

  • During month-end close, responsibilities may require to work extended hours to meet demanding financial deadlines
  • Individual will split their time between the Chicago and Lake Forest offices
  • Must be willing and able to manage multiple projects while meeting deadlines and maintaining a high level of customer service
  • Job does not require travel in general; however, occasional travel may occur in conjunction with special projects or training


This position is critical to ensure timely and accurate accounting and reporting for the ES organization in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles and SEC requirements.  Any error, either in the amount, classification and application of judgment may have a critical impact on the Company’s reported financial results, reputation or cause management to take incorrect actions.

  • This position provides accounting and decision support to the ES organization.  It works closely with leaders across the organization, including: ES, Finance, GUS Accounting, Capital Assets Accounting and Corporate FP&A.
