Manager, Energy Efficiency

Primary Function
The Energy Manager is organizationally accountable to develop and manage business-wide energy & greenhouse gas protocols designed to improve energy consumption efficiency, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, reduce cost, and optimize investment.  The Energy Manager will also be responsible for the measurement and verification information to support continuous improvements in energy management and conservation.




Principal Duties & Responsibilities

    • Develop and implement multi-year strategic energy program designed to improve the energy efficiency of Grainger’s global facilities.
    • Develop and maintain a reporting protocol associated with measuring and managing energy cost and consumption as well as associated greenhouse gas emissions.
    • Develop standardized usage and reporting for company building management systems.
    • Lead organization’s global renewable energy strategy including the development and execution of capital investment strategies.  Research trends, federal/state/local incentives, pricing and educate appropriate business partners on the merits of renewable investments.
    • Implement measurement and verification processes to monitor and report the effectiveness of implemented efficiency projects.
    • Identification and evaluation of third party sources for other energy services including building commissioning/retro-commissioning, ASHRAE energy audits, metering/sub-metering, or other energy consulting services as required.
    • Develop, as requested, capital and/or performance financing strategies for energy efficiency initiatives.
    • Identify, and secure energy efficiency rebates and incentives in support of project funding.
    • Identify opportunities to provide training programs to facility personnel in support of sustainability and energy efficiency initiatives.
    • Develop guidelines and execute energy supply contract purchasing in accordance with corporate risk tolerance objectives and operational requirements.



Preferred Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree Mechanical, Electrical, Energy Management, Industrial Engineering or a related discipline
  • 5-7 years of experience in related field preferred
  • LEED AP, CEM or equivalent strongly preferred, Professional Engineer’s license preferred.
  • Experience with building management systems strongly preferred
  • Experience with greenhouse gas emissions calculations and reporting preferred
  • Strong business case development skills required
  • Strong financial and data analysis skills required
  • Strong presentation, written and verbal skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, as evidenced by success in persuading and influencing others



Work Environment

  • Lake Forest, IL based; travel up to 15-20% as required

Working Relationships

  • This position reports to the Senior Manager of Facilities Operations & Global Sustainability
  • A strong, congenial working relationship should be developed with all management related to Real Estate, Supply Chain and Branch Services departments and operations.
  • Contact outside the Company includes national, regional and local contractors, vendors, and service providers, representatives of utility companies, municipalities, local government officials, not-for-profit organizations, regulatory bodies, insurance agencies, etc.
