Director, Global Environmental Health & Safety

The Director, Global Environmental Health & Safety is a critical leadership role,  tasked with driving the company’s global EH&S strategy and creating a high-performance organization.  This leader must possess a high degree of technical expertise/competency and the ability to instill an innovative EH&S performance culture across all business units.  This culture will help mitigate and eliminate risks for the protection of Grainger’s employees while maintaining standards that adhere to the company’s compliance and reputational requirements.

 

 A process oriented mindset is required as well as the ability to partner/team with the global operational teams, Distribution Center management and senior leadership.  One must effectively work with business or functional leaders by proactively building solutions to resolve issues and appropriately respond to immediate risks. This includes developing short-term and long-term programs and policies to manage resources, derive quantitative measurements, increase technology utilization and implement enterprise-wide solutions to mitigate risk, reduce liability and maintain compliance with US and country equivalent Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Department of Transportation (DOT) and other relevant regulations, including cost related to occupational injury/illness reduction. 

 

Competencies and Experience:

Ten (10) years minimum experience is required in corporate environmental, health and safety management in an industrial setting, across multiple facilities, cultures, and regulatory requirements. Specifically, this position will involve providing EH&S support to multiple domestic and international site locations. Experience with distribution facilities is a benefit.

 

  • EH&S technical degree, engineering degree, or equivalent. Master of Science, Master of Public Health or equivalent degree and/or professional certifications (CSP, CPEA, CIH, CHMM, etc.) preferred.
  • General knowledge of comparable global EHS standards, particularly North America (Canada, US and Mexico) and Europe.  This should also include experience designing and implementing an ergonomics strategy.
  • Experience managing a program specific to ISO compliance, as well as leading organizations through the necessary steps to achieve certification.
  • Experience establishing safety program and driving commitment to safety culture in global organizations.
  • Possess strong leadership skills and ability to communicate with clarity and passion to influence decisions at all levels through mutual respect and drive a best a world class EHS program.
  • Highly motivated, energetic, self-directed individual with advanced analytical and problem-solving skills with willingness to take ownership of issues and achieve buy-in of others.
  • Possess the ability to develop strategies that support Grainger's overall business strategy while ensuring that EH&S and compliance issues are addressed.
  • Must have excellent written and verbal communications skills and the ability to be creative while using management expertise to assure results.
  • Must have a common sense and practical approach in developing strategies and constructing solutions for issues or needs identified.
  • Familiarity with GenSuite and their technology-based EHS systems.
