Position Description

Responsible for everyday management of Freight Payment-Audit functions.  Works closely with Transportation Manager, Carriers, Freight Payment/Audit Companies and internal departments to improve processes and coordinate daily activities.  Report on freight payment-audit measurements; give recommendations for efficiencies and quality improvements.  Assessor of the Grainger Transportation Sarbanes Oxley process and the primary contact for Grainger Internal Audit.


  • Oversee the freight audit process ensuring continuous improvements are being made.
  • Manage the day to day carrier freight payment process ensuring accurate GL account coding, invoice auditing and resolution for $450M in annual freight spend.
  • Oversee and monitor carrier rate submission and contract negotiations, including storage of documents (DMS).
  • Oversee and monitor company insurance requirements for all active carriers.
  • Aggressively manage relationship with Freight Pay provider to ensure payment of relevant invoices from Transportation providers
    • Assign and manage special projects to drive savings
    • Leverage relationship to extract and utilize industry trends to minimize spend
    • Monitor audit process to ensure proper payment of invoices
    • Drive ongoing data integrity and process efficiency initiatives
  • Supervise and monitor Transportation Associates, making sure daily tasks are completed and provide necessary support and communications to make sure duties are accomplished in a timely manner.
  • Maintain relationships with suppliers/carriers ensuring that parties are following Grainger processes and contractual agreements.
  • Work with Carriers to streamline and optimize billing processes
  • Work with Supplier Performance Management, TMS Provider, Suppliers and Carriers regarding tactical transportation issues involving drop ship, inbound or outbound shipments including special delivery requirements, expedites and inventory redeployment.
  • Provide input and testing support to SAP and TMS enhancements and upgrades.
  • Ensure all rating systems have accurate rate information.
  • Stay informed on Transportation regulations and communicate regulatory changes that affect current processes.
  • Participate in or lead projects or interdepartmental teams.
  • Compile and analyze financial and statistical reports.
  • Prepare reclassification of GL codes including donations and provide expense data for monthly Financial Reporting














Position Requirements:

  • High school diploma or its equivalent, Bachelor’s degree desired.
  • 3 years’ experience in a transportation, distribution, accounting or purchasing function.
  • Previous supervision experience preferred, but not necessary.
  • Knowledge of DOT, IATA, NMFC, and other transportation regulations.
  • Knowledge of general accounting practices.
  • General knowledge of database analysis tools and query techniques.
  • BA/BS or equivalent preferred.
  • 3-5 years of experience in related field preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead, direct, and participate on projects bringing them to a final conclusion. Must be able to solicit ideas, encourage participation, resolve conflict and optimize resolution.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint.
  • Must have the skills necessary to plan and direct resources to meet specified deadlines on time.
  • Organizational skills to manage multiple priorities in a deadline driven environment.
  • Negotiation skills to resolve day to day service problems or issues with external carriers.
  • Written and oral communication skills to present clear and concise recommendations.
  • Analytical skills for compiling and interpreting data.
  • Project Management Experience
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision
  • Ability to meet deadlines
