The Category Manager - Market Development:


  • Manages new and existing market development emphasizing the product support needed to penetrate a new market segment. Serves as the Subject Matter Expert (SME) and will collaborate with New Markets Team, Product Management, Marketing, Inside & Outside Sales, Field Service and Product Technical Support.  Requires frequent customer interaction.


  • Manages product offering for new market by working closely with Category Team Manager (CTM) and remaining business teams.  Researches customer needs, competitor product lines and adding or deleting product while exceeding targeted objectives.  Applies understanding of the product, delivery and pricing needs of core consumers, markets, and channels. 
    • Develops merchandising and marketing plans for digital and traditional marketing channels on key product groups and communicates to all departments.
    • Coordinates training resources (internal or supplier) of new products to ensure a successful customer purchase experience, as well as an understanding of the supply chain process for the new product.
    • Market pricing assessment assuring competitive pricing strategies.
    • Understand and foster supplier relationships for products, resources and technology to service new market.
    • Manage projects related to new and existing sales opportunities.  Follows up and reports on critical items to key team members.  


  • Leverages analytical skillset to perform product portfolio audits and line reviews vs. current market and competitors’ product offering.  Understanding of product pricing, margin impact and ROI through analytic research.  Perform routine market product audits to ensure product offering rivals the competition (SWOT Analysis).


  • Manages supplier relationships to optimize performance for assigned product groups and source selection.  Works closely with Purchasing Team on new products and ongoing supplier management to ensure the best source(s) and management utilization through the product lifecycle.  Supports supplier change initiatives (including global sourcing where applicable) ensuring product meets all requirements of the offering.  Working cross functionally with Product Management and Marketing (Digital, Product Information Management & Marketing Services) teams assuring marketing materials and online content is organized to compete against the competition.





  • Bachelor's Degree in Business or Marketing or equivalent work experience and 5-7 years of experience in Marketing or Product Management or relevant product knowledge; Masters Degree in Marketing preferred. Experience in industrial distribution and knowledge of Fasteners, Chemicals, Electrical, and fleet related products a plus.
  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal. 
  • Ability to present progress and development of market and product development, handle multiple priorities and facilitate training.
  • Excellent teamwork skills, strong analytical and organizational skills.  Excellent PC knowledge, including Outlook, Excel, Word, and PowerPoint. 
  • Up to 15% travel is required, possible international travel.
