The Accountant I - Direct Tax will:

  1. Prepares company sales tax returns in accordance with taxing authority’s requirements.  Completes returns utilizing spreadsheets and file uploads to be entered or imported through government online filing systems.  Ensures payments to jurisdictions tie to general ledger and reconciles all discrepancies.
  2. Prepares appropriate month end journal entries for sales tax to include Sales Tax Rounding, Sales Tax Discounts, Vendor Use Tax, and Inventory Withdrawals Use Tax.  
  3. Obtains new and updated sales tax exemption certificates, verifies the validity of sales tax exemption certificates, revises customer’s tax status on systems as appropriate, maintains the system for filing exemption certificates and is responsible for process to obtain expired exemption certificates. Responsible for answering questions from both internal and external customers regarding sales tax and manages the sales tax mailbox.
  4. Works with Accounts Payable team to ensure sales and use taxes are being paid when required by law.  Reviews invoice batches to ensure all use tax is appropriately captured for payment to the taxing jurisdictions. Makes adjustments as needed. 
  5. Ensures all sales tax registrations are up to date and is responsible for renewing licenses when required. 
  6. Researches sales tax implications on new company initiatives and provides findings to accounting leadership team.
  7. Reviews customer requests for sales tax refunds and prepares documentation for approval. Assists with preparing paperwork and reporting for internal/external sales tax audits.
  8. Supports Accounts Payable function by producing and completing 1099 reporting in accordance with IRS reporting requirements.   Maintains the systems and reporting that is needed to complete the reporting.     
  9. Verifies the accuracy of A/P batches entered by others
  10. Verifies and approves employee expense reports and performs necessary follow-up when needed.  Assures compliance with Imperial’s travel and entertainment policies and procedures as well as maintaining spreadsheets on the data from the expense reports.
  11. Maintains the reporting and completes the filings for company’s unclaimed property.


Ideal Candidate:

Associate's Degree or equivalent work experience of 0-2 years' in accounting field.
