Position Details:
This position supports Grainger Canada's strategy by assuring effective end-to-end processes and controls in addition to timely and accurate financials. Through extensive review, analysis, interpreting of financial metrics and benchmarking, this role also delivers valuable insights to help instill a Controllership mindset across the organization. Managers are not only expected to drive a disciplined approach but are also empowered to seek creative solutions.
 
 
You Will:
  • Lead a team of 2-5 individuals, including selection/hiring, goal setting, performance management, coaching/development and training. Drive team member engagement, retention and productivity.
  • Oversee the accounting for various general accounting areas, including all aspects of the monthly close process, to ensure all necessary entries are recorded and account balances are properly reconciled and supported. Leverage Blackline to automate and streamline the closing process.
  • Analyze balance sheet and income statement accounts to identify variances and explain underlying business reasons for changes in activity.
  • Manage relationship with third party provider for all environmental recycling filings. Review and file monthly sales tax filings and Statistics Canada reporting.
  • Understand and be able to articulate end to end processes that impact general accounting.
  • Drive continuous improvement by automating, refining, and implementing processes, tools and deliverables both within Controllership and supporting business functions.
  • Assess risks and opportunities and identify key operational and financial issues to be addressed. Provide recommendations and influence business decisions. Collaborate and assist cross functional business partners to execute strategic initiatives and investigate and resolve issues. Maintain close working relationships with internal business partners.
  • Ensure all key controls over financial reporting are designed and operating effectively, as assessed by internal and external auditors. Support the quarter reviews and annual financial statement audit performed by external auditors. Ensure that all monthly, quarterly and annual financial close activities, financial reporting, analysis and audit activities are completed in a timely and accurate manner.

You Have:
  • Associate's Degree Bachelor of Commerce or equivalent Required
  • CPA or equivalent Upon Hire Required
  • 3+ years of experience in public accounting, internal audit or related large corporate accounting/finance experience required; Previous supervisory experience is preferred Preferred
  • Strong knowledge about the following is required: US GAAP, AP & AR processes, account reconciliations, prepaids, capital assets, SG&A
  • Excellent analytical skills, intellectual curiosity, big picture thinking, ability to challenge the status quo and determine how controllership activities can be planned and executed more effectively and efficiently.
  • Understand end to end processes, identification of critical risks to assess whether controls are designed and operating effectively.
  • Financial statement acumen, including knowledge of connectivity between Profit & loss, Balance Sheet and Cashflow statements.
  • Adherence to deadlines, especially during the monthly and quarterly close process. Additional hours may be required during close cycles.
  • Independently problem-solve and be able to determine root cause and develop action plans to resolve issues
  • Must be process oriented and be able to understand processes from start to finish
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills. Ability to understand the details and effectively present to Senior Management in a clear and concise manner.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills and ability to build effective relationships and influence decision making.
  • Must be able to shift focus easily and draw timely conclusions as business needs arise
  • Experience with SAP, BPC and Blackline are strongly preferred. Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office, particularly Excel. Power BI and Snowflake would be considered an asset.
